Following the unbridled success of the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate, the government has decided to introduce a new "Green Salad Mandate" to tackle the UK's growing obesity problem. This will stipulate that at least 28% of the meals sold by fast-food suppliers this year must be green salads, with that target percentage rising each year until 2035, at which time all fast-food meals must be green salads. From 2030, only green salads and so called "hybrid" meals will be permitted for sale, although the exact nature of these "hybrid" meals is yet to be defined, leaving suppliers struggling to make mid to long term product plans. If the suppliers fail to hit the mandated targets, they will be liable for fines of up to £15 on every non-salad meal sold above the threshold.

The government are confident that enforcing these targets for the fast-food suppliers, without taking any steps to incentivise buyers to change their behaviour, will bring about the desired effect of a healthier population, despite the obvious reluctance of consumers to embrace the salad option when choosing a fast-food meal.

Many nutritionalists have pointed out that various alternative healthy meal choices exist in addition to green salads, but the government has decided to focus on this single option in their attempt to tackle the problem of obesity. A government spokesperson said "Rather than specify a desired outcome and give suppliers the opportunity to innovate and provide a raft of potential solutions to suit many needs, we have decided to myopically dictate a single option, even though it's clear that this is likely to be unsuitable for a large tranch of the population. We are committed to this policy and will steadfastly remain so until shortly before the next milestone in 2030, at which point a general election will be imminent and all bets will be off."
