Last August, we had a fantastic week in Zell am See in Austria. Amazing scenery, brilliant hikes, perfect weather & gorgeous food/drink.

So much so, we fancy doing another bit of Austria this summer and have been thinking about staying in Kitzbühel. Has anybody spent any time here in the summer? If you have, are there any must see/must do things? We’d probably do a day in Innsbruck (we did Salzburg last year) and spend some time along at Schwarzsee but any other advice would really be appreciated.

Also, is it better to stay in Kitzbühel rather than in St Johann? It feels like there might be more going on in Kitzbühel. Or, are we missing somewhere else that's better in the region?

We'd definitely want to be in a town with a bit of life but with easy access to getting to great walks and visiting alms/huts etc.

Cheers.

Don’t know about the summer, we stayed in Kirchberg just east of Kitzbühel for New Year this year and it was lovely. We visited Kitzbühel but preferred Kirchberg.

I believe all the gondola routes run all year so you can walk and cycle in the (beautiful) mountains any time.

I hope this post isn’t completely pointless…

Absolutely not pointless! Thank you very much.

I love summer walking holidays in the alps, though the towns are normally pretty quiet.

Mayrhofen is a favorite, though one year I did go to Kitzbuhel for a week. It was pretty quiet, for half of the week, then a Harley Davidson festival started up and the atmosphere was great, lots of live music and entertainment in the streets. I see it's on again this year.

I don't have any interest in Motorbikes, but it really made the town come to life.

I think it’s a bit too small to base yourself for a week. I might pick a few places to combine it with. It’s very pretty though

Never stayed in Kitzbuhel during the summer (have snowboard in Kitzbuhel and nearby Kirchberg), but when I last researched for a summer holiday (with kids), Maria Alms and nearby Saalfelden seems pretty good locations with plenty of activities.

However, if you feel the need for a bit of variety, I previously stayed by the lake outside Villach. Good location as it border both Italy and Slovenia. If you fancy, nip across to the Italian side for lunch (which is what the Austrian does as it's much better value!) or pop across to Sloevnia to the national park or Kranjska Gora etc..so plenty of outdoor stuffs to keep you busy.

Thanks all. Your advice is much appreciated. We’ve decided to skip Austria as it doesn’t sound/feel like we’ll get quite the same experience as we did in Zell am See, so we’ve booked a week in Italy.

Kitzbuhel is lovely, but still touristy in the summer time. Zell Am See much the same I’ve found. We’ve gravitated to Bad Hofgastien not too far away. Lovely town with Bad Gastien down the road too. On a rail line so great to get about. Also, it’s no too far from the großglockner which is fantastic.

ssshh!

You've got a spa with sauna and massages: https://www.felsentherme.com/en
All great IME.

Then you can drive onto the train and travel 1970s MotorRail style for a bit.

My advice is keep, keeping it to yourselves. One of the main reasons for us not returning to Zell am See is other people. We unfortunately experienced a lot of visitors spitting and throwing litter which was disappointing. Everywhere we visited outside of Zell was immaculate.

I’ve been to Kitzbuhel twice in the summer and absolutely loved it. However that was when I was a wee 8yr old in 1982 and then in early 90’s. So sorry OP, I can’t remember specifics and be more helpful and I’m sure it’s changed.

I remember staying in Hotel Tiefenbruner (odd what you recall!) and being enthralled by all the Austrian buildings. A charming place and would love to go back.

Close! We're going back to Malcesine as we love it so much and it's unbeatable value right now for what we're looking for. We do usually end up further north into the Dolomites when we're there. Spectacular part of the world.
