Here we see a photo of CanAm’s Cayman/Boxster and its slapdash rev counter, showing MINUS revs!

Grounds for rejection I think you’ll agree. However my quandary is this: if the engine is showing an indicated -100 rpm when turned off, when it’s running and showing an INDICATED 4000rpm, at what speed will the engine actually be running, 4100 or 3900rpm. Having lost one night’s sleep to the matter, guidance would be appreciated.

Why don’t you hold an HT lead and count the shocks you get….. hehe.

Just another one to worry you…. If your speedo is reading let’s say 5% low and you’re meticulous about servicing, you’ll need to work out the mileage that the engine needs it’s service otherwise you’ll have gone over it…

Sleep well x

Sorted! Now I've just got to get rid of all those warning lights!!

There's much wrong with that dash

If they'd have rotated the speed around to the right and then brought the temp and fuel over to the left, that would have reduced that giant black space where another dial should be.

Also it would balance the hideous mismatch of central points of the dials.

The revs would be smallest thing that would upset me looking at that smile

Whatever you do, don't take a look at a Lancia Delta Integrale dash whilst it's at rest. hehe

At least all the Integrale dials rotate the same way - spare a though for OCD-afflicted Aston owners who have to cope with an anti-clockwise rev counter…

That's lovely and calming, well balanced and my OCD is at rest!

Why is there one yellow dot after the sixty whilst the others are all red? That's annoying

Nope - 4,100

The needle is at -100 when the engine is off. When the engine is at 100rpm (yes, I know it’s not possible) the needle will be showing zero. When the engine is at 1,100rpm, it will be showing 1,000. When the engine is at 4,100rpm it will be showing 4,000

Therefore, the engine is always doing 100rpm more than the needle is showing

If you lower you seat a tad to reduce your sight line, you may find the rev counter magically corrects itself.

Who says they have 2/4s of a tank left?
Is that being different for the sake of it?

I have never understood why they did that, it would drive me insane.

Or maybe when the engine is off the needle isn't indicating anything and that's just where the stop is. When the engine is running it indicates the actual revs.

I actually like the counterclockwise rev counter.

But I'll raise you one from an X1/9...
