I stumbled by accident over this video by Chris Payne on how he composed the original tune - its really fascinating and Chris comes over as a thoroughly nice humble bloke:

...I'd forgotten what a seminal tune it is

I’ve been a fan of Chris/Tubeway Army/Gary Numan/Ultravox/Billy Currie since I was a teenager back in the mid to late 70s. Never knew that story so a fabulously interesting watch for me.
I’m off to my keyboard now to play THAT song

Amazing 1980 track - Now Very Very hard to find in its original form on Vinyl - the vinyl 'Analogue' version well worth hearing, today’s remastered [completely f
kED UP] compressed DIgi version a disgrace - Vinyl 12" is among the greatest 12" 45rpm EVER IMO - 45 years old and will always be timeless listening :thumbup
Just wish today's musicians had as much musicality.

Thanks for posting this too and I hadn't seen this before, in my top 5 tracks of all time...a perfect piece of music to my ears. I didn't realise Chris Payne had so much of a contribution to it and always thought it was very much a Billy Currie and Midge Ure effort.
Although the Visage version is "the one" Midge does a great version now with much less guitar than the clip above, just brilliant.

Only got a couple of 7" singles of the original, need to search out the 12".
