I'm looking to get some portable gaming and wondering if I could save a bunch getting a Vita over something newer like a Steam Deck as it'd only be used on holiday's and not much at home.
I've watched reviews online for the Vita and it still seems like you can buy games for it (although Sony's made it more convoluted now) officially or go for alternative routes.

Anyone have one, do you still use it / enjoy it? Has anyone followed the custom fireware route - is that any good?

Yep I have 2, the original PSP and the PSP Vita. The Vita battery lasts for ages. Homebrew it and download the games, put emulators on it to get old games from other companies etc. I only use mine for hols or whilst watching TV, the games are excellent.

Yeah, got a PSP and a Vita.. and a Steamdeck (and some weird Miyoo stuff).
Haven't touched the Sony stuff since the steamdeck arrived.

(not TommyD, are you?)

Thanks all, was hoping to go back through alot of the PS back catalogue with it which sounds like you can play a fair few of them. Had friends say the steamdeck is heavy in your hands which has put me off abit along with the costs but then playing my steam library is very appealing.

Only ever had 1 name on P/H.

Steamdeck is heavy-ish - but it's also super comfy. The vita/PSP always felt off to me (even though I love them).

I have one (the original OLED model) and play it from time to time.

The Vita games are still decent and hold up well, even the PSP stuff is very good too (it's compatible with many PSP games). Plus it can play a lot of PS1 stuff that looks good on the small screen.

It's absolutely tiny compared to a Steamdeck.

The device is quite easy to root these days and I got a cartridge to microSD adaptor which I haven't set up yet. I also have the official 64gig Vita memory card which was never released in Europe as far as I know and had to import from Japan at the time, for a pretty penny. You will need a memory card for downloaded games and they were always relatively small in size and quite expensive. Rooting plus the microsd adaptor would be the way to go.

Downsides: It can be awkward to hold ... I have an actual handgrip 'shell' for it, which helps a lot. Only shoulder buttons - no triggers. Analogue sticks are almost more like nubs and are not clickable either. Power/data connector is proprietary on the original models (you can get third party cables cheaply though, or you used to be able to as I have a couple).

Thanks all, have been trying to find the one that has the games I want to play, mostly I’d like to play the PS2 GTA’s but it seems with my searching that it’s a lot of work to get them running. Have I miss-googled and read the wrong thing?

Think I’m down to a PSP as there are tons of games I like on that or a steam deck.

The Vita is highly compatible with PSP games out of the box - the screen res is literally 2x both horizontally and vertically so they scale up perfectly and look great on the original OLED. Some of the best titles on my Vita are PSP. There are a few which don't work but that's mostly because of licensing issues and you can 'whitelist' them if you jailbreak.

Vita doesn't really have enough raw power to run PS2 emulation. It's on the edge even for N64 and Dreamcast. For PS1, PSP and below though, its very capable.

If you just want to play as many systems as possible under emulation, there are a ton of android-based handhelds out there that can do up to Wii (even some Switch stuff at the top end) if you are willing to spend enough. Steamdeck is also very capable for emulation but is very bulky for that purpose.

Didn't want to leave this without an update, thanks to everyone who replied it was really helpful. In the end I went the steam deck route and got a 512 OLED and to say I'm pleased is an understatement, what a fantastic piece of kit. Got all my old PS2 GTA's running and have got some of the essential addons installed along with mounting it to transfer files. Only slight issue I have is running some of my newer games that require launchers but that's not a steam deck problem.

Getting a case soon and am looking into getting an emulator installed to try and sate my PS2 game fix while I work out how to create a retro gaming corner in my house biggrin

Vita was ace once opened up.... Sony dropped the bat....

My steamdeck has kind of taken over the role now... doesn't do much now!

Get an Android tablet with a Snapdragon Gen 8 2 or 3, as they have developers working on graphics drivers, and a world of emulation opens up.

PSP games will work well on any recent ish Android device.

I've got a 3000 PSP and a 2nd Gen Vita o got from a CEX in very good condition.

I loved the vita when it came out so glad to have one again.

Just got killzone and metal gear solid for it so far.

O love handheld as I get more gaming in as a full time dad and self employed artist so pick up and play helps.
