An ultrasound suggests that a small lump in my hand is a nerve sheath tumour - in rare cases these can be cancerous, apparently. I was put on a 14-day wait, which I assumed meant that I'd be seen within that timeframe.

The hospital has just called to say that, in a week's time, a nurse is going to call me to discuss the lump. That will be about twelve days.

Am I becoming to cynical, or is this a ploy to hit their 14-day target? Or is there anything meaningful that a nurse can determine over the phone?

That’s exactly how it should work.

Diagnostics flag something, 2WW pathway applied, appointment either virtual, telephone or physical with 2 weeks to understand the next steps, further tests, investigations etc.

It’s not 2-weeks to treatment.

It'll be a triage Nurse. They really know their st. They'll be able to take a few details on how long you've had it etc and work from there. I wouldn't worry, the NHS can, and do move like st through a Goose when needed. I've experienced it firsthand.

They can - my prostate checks of MRI and biopsy were done amazingly quickly - but things fall into cracks too often and it can be very difficult to get hold of anyone, an even more difficult to get someone who cares enough to look into it for you.

It’s more likely a specialist nurse.

All my prostrate cancer treatment from initial blood test- doctor finger test - mri scan - biopsy ( I may of had a cat - scan ) were done within 2 weeks for each step .
Kidney was the same , every thing was done within 2 weeks , only part that was longer was the op , as they were waiting for a result of another biopsy , and until they got the result they wernt wernt prepared operate as wernt sure which was more important , after they got the result of the biopsy I was in hospital being operated on within days .

You can fall into cracks though. My wife spent months being fobbed off by the gp for a lump being told every time it was nothing.
So we went private and it was cancer - from private GP to biopsy, results, surgery was less than one week but did cost a couple thousand.

While the lump on the hand will no doubt be readily treatable, I'm not so sure the surrounding malignant fatty growth can be satisfactorily excised hehe

A friend of mine had a very similar experience. He was referred by his GP but then fobbed off by his local NHS hospital and only got a correct diagnosis when he went private. Sadly his situation is not good.

The waiting times to be seen for referrals at my local NHS hospital are shocking. They are rated 'needs improvement' in all areas apart from the vague category of 'care'. Certainly the £250 I spent for a private diagnosis a while back was worth it after two cancelled NHS hospital appointments, on top of an already long wait.

The only encouraging thing that I can say about them is that if cancer is (highly) suspected or actually found they can move quickly.

Glad to read some positive reports on this thread.

I wasn’t aware of this 14 day thing.

I had a ct scan at the end of November to investigate some abdominal pain. 2 weeks later I get a call from my gp to say they could see an abnormality and that I would be referred.

8 weeks later I finally hear back from the colorectal dept. I’m booked in for a colonoscopy where a tumour is found, a week later I’m sat in the consultants office listen to him tell me it’s cancer.

It’s by the by now to be honest, but that 8 week wait seems a little excessive?

Firstly, I hope they are able to sort you out.

Secondly, whilst I am not a medic, I wonder whether much difference would have been made by having to wait eight weeks, as opposed to two. Do cancers grow that quickly? There is however the mental stress, I understand that.

I got a biopsy result on a afternoon & was told to be ready to be in for op within days , got another phone call that day saying can you make it for 8 am tomorrow , arrived at hospital at 8 to be told we need to get you ready now as your going straight down , first op ,
No idea how quick tumours grow but they seemed to be in a rush to remove mine .

I know what you thinking , I thought the same when a consultant told me 5 yrs previously they’d spotted a small cyst on my kidney that was now a malignant tumour , I’d had regular mri scans over that period , so why hadn’t they acted earlier , It can’t of just suddenly changed to a malignant tumour overnight, and what are we told the sooner it’s diagnosed/ dealt with the better . But what I’d say is stay Positive , I was worried but I already have cancer so I just stayed positive, I remember sitting there with the consultant after the op to remove the tumour , to discuss the results , you can have abnormal tumours / normal tumours , abnormal are hard to treat because they are abnormal , but yours is normal , great news , we grade the tummy it’s 0-11 , with 11 being the most aggressive, normally outside the kidney ( mrs was in bits by then , must admit my hands were shaking ) , yours is 0 , we see no reason for any more treatment , we’re discharging you back to your trust with just mri scans at 1 yr / 3 yr& 5 yr .
So I know what’s going through you mind but there can be posotive outcomes , so stay positive .
Nb consultant did say though , looking at your file you are using your 9 lives up fairly quickly !!

Probably a cancelled appointment and you were next on the list.

Thanks for the well wishes, I’m having to have further scans now to see if it’s spread but so far they seem to be optimistic.

The tumour is approx 2cm, hopefully it is contained. I’ve been told due to the part of the bowel it’s in that surgery should be ok and I wont miss losing a part of it. It’s been a rough few months up to this point but right now is definatly the worst part so far - I know I have cancer but I don’t know what stage it is. Seems every answer just reveals more questions, but I will get there.
