After the big storm a couple of weeks ago we lost a good few tiles.
Been waiting for roofer (known locally to be good) to quote who came out today. Quoted c.£1k.
About a dozen tiles and refit about a dozen more that have moved, 10m ridge material (some sort of metal) and repair to chimney.

Insurance excess is basically the same. So no point at this stage paying.

However, would it be better to go via insurance?
They are likely to put scaffolding up etc which has pros and cons.
Maybe a better job? Or maybe not?

House is c.130 years old.. so was expecting regular upkeep.

WWYD?

Scaffold will be probs £500 of that

Someone else might do it off ladders.

Then again its better to get it done properly as you realise!

Not too punchy if I’m honest.

We paid £600 recently for the ridge tiles to be sorted as a few were slipping and refit about half a dozen slate tiles.

About a days work and no scaffolding involved and he was well recommended.

Suggesting a couple of days work, so maybe not too bad?

Its basically going to cost me the same if I use insurance or not but I wonder if using insurance is going to cost more in the long run.

Pretty much every house on the street has some damage from the storm, but looks like ours is the worst. Roofer looks after 5 or 6 in the street so puts his ladders up and works his way along!

Be cautious if you intend to approach your insurance provider...

We were smack in the red zone, I dont think they would argue it.
But I do think they would claw it back.

Having my roof repaired in a week or two, lost a ridge tile on a hip and loosened a few adjacent ones in a storm last year, roofer is swapping over to a dry ridge and with the scaffold it is not far off £800, my excess is £300 so am paying the lot myself rather than triple in increased premiums over the next x number of years

Be super careful of even calling your insurer even to make an enquiry. I know it shouldn’t be this way but I called ours years ago after my daughter spilled Amoxicillin and destroyed the stair carpet with a bright yellow stain. After an hour on the phone the handler advised me I had removed accidental damage from our policy. I thanked them and ended the call. I had been with them 10yrs and never claimed.

Six months later I renewed online with a cheaper provider. Two weeks later my policy was cancelled as I had a claim that wasn’t declared. Yes you guessed it the insurer with the red telephone logo who I had previously been with logged it as a claim. When challenged they said that even though there was no claim submitted or payment processed my calling showed a propensity to claim. They logged it as a claim and told me if I didn’t like it to use the ombudsman.

We had 3 quotes. All similar. New slates and clips. No scaffold needed. When we had the first quote, I thought it looked high. But it appears that is the going rate in Devon. It’s similar to the price the op was quoted.

At the other end of the scale... We had 3 tiles move and almost come off in that last big storm.

Local roofer chap and his mate came round and got it sorted for £60 cash job done.

From what I had been hearing locally I was expecting it to be £90-120.

Mate was charged £90 to replace one ridge tile.
