We’re off on a family trip to Australia later this year and it would be nice to be able to take underwater photos while snorkeling etc.

I’ve never taken a photo underwater in my life; I have an RX100 mk1 and a Canon 6D, so for £100-150 (or less used) I could get a waterproof housing for the former. I’m less inclined to risk dunking the latter, being a newby to such things and I think I’d rather just hold something one handed.

Or I could spend a similar amount on a used waterproof compact like an Olympus TG-5 or older, or one of the many Fujifilm XP series.

Or I see recommendations for a GoPro or DJI Osmo Action; would probably need to spend a bit more to get something even a few years old. I’ve not used one, but perhaps it appeals as it’s not just “another camera” that might sit in a drawer unused after the holiday. Though anything could be sold on again after of course.

I’m not expecting National Geographic quality results, but it’d be nice to be able to have some half-decent photos of the family underwater and any wildlife I am lucky enough to see. What would you recommend?
