Yesterday we called in at Thorpe arch looking for a piece of furniture,

everything is closed, apart from the cafe,
they now have a huge underused carpark that would be ideal for meet ups, spoke to the owner he says they have a few car and bike clubs turn up each month, happy for more,

I enquired with the estate office about using Thorpe Arch for a competitive car event. I was told in no uncertain terms we would not be welcome!

A "competitive" car event - so you wanted to race or drift around the industrial estate?

I remember going there as a kid when they had loads of furniture stores etc kinda before out of town shopping centres became a thing in the mid 80s. There was a huge pirate ship playground thing and a couple of real tanks you could climb on etc?

No not race. Part of a Historic Road Rally, so it would have been driving tests in a car park area, or in around one of the wasteland sites (not normally accessed by the public). Totally safe and commonly done on loads of industrial estates and old MOD areas.

I suppose like yourself they would just assume it would quite different.

The point I was making is the management seem very against anything involving cars, they perceive joy riders and people charging around the private roads at inappropriate speeds. I didn't even get past the receptionist!

All the shops have gone a while ago. There are a lot of new units gone up recently, some quite big. I have a couple of engineering clients on there in the older units and the car sales/service place has been there several years on the bottom end of the estate.

Googled it - there was a massive pirate ship and tanks. Lots of talk of the tanks always stinking of p*ss (they did!!!) and apparently at least one of them went to Moscow to a museum. Proper random...

Might have a drive out there sometime and take some posh photos - bet theres loads of photo opps around there...

Not sure if it’s worth a photo trip, the retail area is pretty much a concrete wasteland, just the cafe left.
The rest of the estate is just generic industrial estate with a few old military buildings and blast walls left.
There are a few interesting looking areas, with ex military buildings and bits of the old railway network, but these are fenced off. The railway was interesting I believe there was a spur to the Airfield at Tockwith (known as Marston Moor, Guy Gibson was OC there for a while)
The ‘pirate’ ship went, maybe twenty years back now, the tanks before that.

There was a plan to redevelop the retail and wasteland areas for housing, with school, retail stuff and possibly medical. But it was killed off by the residents of Walton, on traffic grounds.
Shame as it made more sense than some other developments in the area.
