Heel Spurs - Haglund Deformity
Discussion
I've had heel spurs as long as I can remember. When i was younger they didn't cause me any problem, however as time wore on it became more difficult to get comfortable shoes that didn't rub. I would hate to think of the number of shoes and trainers I've had to bin because I couldn't wear them in.
Back in 2018 I went to the doctor and was referred. They told me I was a candidate for surgery but was self employed at the time so didn't proceed.
More recently I've started to suffer with bouts of crippling pane in my ankle where the achilles swells up. Rest (I run a fair bit on a treadmill), anti inflammatory, ice packs will eventually sort it, but it can take a week or two to get back to normal walking.
After another bout in December I decided to go back to the Doctor, and now employed I have leveraged private medical. I've had an MRI and the consultant tells me I have no issues with my ankle or tendons, although I do have medium to acute growth of bone into my achilles.
I've decided to have the (left) bone shaved and am due in next month. They are going to detach my achilles, shave the bone and reattach.
2 weeks non weight bearing, followed by 6-8 weeks in a moon boot. Then if that is successful I need to think about having my right one done.
Anyone had this done?

I've had this done on both my heels and its been a mixed bag since....
I had my right one done via the nhs
left one private through nuffield
Before the surgeries I suffered from really tight Achilles and constant pain
After the tightness and pain had gone.
Also shoes last me much longer before rubbing through on the heel.
After the surgery on the right one I partially re-ruptured my achilles and had to go back in a boot.
After the surgery on the left one, and towards the end of recovery i had begun running again and had another set back as I fractured my heelbone that was attributed to bone weakening due to the surgeries
I'm about 10 years on from the first surgery now and I still do not have the same balance and strength as I did prior and I have really struggled over the years with trying to get it back.
I have found it really difficult mentally to recover the strength as its such a large drop off and not something I had to train specifically before and I seem much more susceptible to muscle soreness which makes it a vicious circle of recovery and training
