Is it me, or has there been a profusion of gambling related ads/programs/leaflets of late? Every other program is seemingly sponsored by online gambling companies, there's programs on TV about poker, I have bumpf drop out of innocent mags with 'tips' on how win at online poker!!
What's going on? In an age where the economy is barely surviving on people buying goods on credit, and people are heading deeper into debt, why is this becoming so acceptable now? Is the goverment sponsored by gambling companies also???? What a nasty, vulture-like society we live in at present!

Gambling (Casinos & bingo & bookies etc) is now monster business. The whole industry has had a shake up with changes in legislation over recent years.

The tax revenue to the government is huge...and set to increase with the extra Casino licences being issued.

I guess it's similar to smoking: the government want to be seen to be concerned, but can't afford to lose the income!

I thought they cut tax on winnings?

But you're right - more gambling, booze, credit - is it just the permissive society or is it a cunning ploy to keep 'the people' happy while the country fall apart around them?

Maybe the government have realised that people should be allowed to look after themselves, and do not need nanny to hold their hand at every step...

I blame the National Lottery (or whatever they call it now). It has made gambling acceptble.

I am tired of all this hysteria against casinos whipped up by the usual suspects in the Tabloids.

Instead of running to mummy (the government) we should treat people as responsible adults and let them take the consequences of their actions.

Who is it that should control our lives, ourselves or the all knowing bureaucrat. It is the hypocrisy that really bothers me, commentators moaning one minute about red tape and the next about the government loosening Casino regulations.

Over recent years the growing popularity and acceptability of the Lottery, Poker (both on TV and via the interweb), coupled with the government’s recent deregulation of the gaming industry (particularly casinos) have altogether imho contributed to gambling’s higher profile. Despite it being termed “deregulation” the new legislation will actually cap the number of new casinos to 17 (with only one regional “Vegas” style casino - until the government changes its mind that is!) whereas under existing legislation there is actually no limit to the number of casinos the country can have – it’s still a matter of demand and for the local licensing magistrates. All casino operators have to be incorporated in this country and pay gaming duty on their gaming win and corporation tax on their profits. There will be relaxations though - e.g. allowing more slot machines and permitting internet gambling companies to be legally operating and licensed in the UK which will allow the HM Revenue & Excise their slice. The first changes under the new Gambling Act funnily enough come into effect this Saturday 1st October; 20 jackpot style slot machines permitted in casinos, no 24 hour delay for entry as a member and the new regulator; the Gambling Commission becomes effective. Interesting times ahead, especially if you work in the industry . . .

on local radio this morning (broadland) they were discussing a new casino being opened in great yarmouth and some 'expert' from a support group or other came on and said, in the most self important voice she could muster 'what you dont realise is that opening this casino will encourage gambling'.

erm, no love, it will facilitate gambling. you can see why they pay her the big bucks, carncha?
