Hi All, do any of you have experience of a TV that will do all the freeview channels, but doesn't need an internet connection.
We are not worried about the APPS or catch up etc.
We bought one from Currys at the weekend, tethered it to a phone for required updates, tuned the Freeview, and left it with the chap.
However as soon as the phone tether was out of range, he coudn't get any Freeview channels working.
This was after being reassured by the Label-Readers that wander around the shop, pupporting to be Tech Experts assured us it didn't need internet.

I thought Freeview had only ever needed an aerial connection.

I only ever use my Internet connection for the apps like prime etc. Never with Freeview.

I'm not aware of Freeview Terrestial channels needing Internet access. Was he trying to watch HD channels? Was he trying to watch the wrong TV region?

As the others have said, Freeview uses the aerial. Did it get connected?

Did you setup Freely rather than Freeview?

You don't need internet. My mum's ancient Toshiba gets Freeview through an aerial on the roof, and has never connected to the internet as it isn't a Smart TV.
Maybe, rather than being a Freeview failure, it is the TV that needs to "check in" before it will work?

I’m wondering if the OP is getting confused with Freeview play which does require an Internet connection for the catch up services.

I suspect this may be the case. Terrestrial Freeview doesn't need an internet connection so it's trying to watch something else.

OP here - thanks for the answers - I think the chap didn't actually realise what he'd got - Freeview does work fine through the aerial, as we left him, he started fiddling and fecked it up.

He's got one of those mobile Dongles that will give him some ability to stream when that's set up correctly with a Sim card

All sorted.

Even with Freeview Play he should still get the terrestrial channels without needing a connection. I have a Humax Freeview Play box that is only used for terrestrial viewing and it does it very well. All apps are handled by a separate Apple TV box which has the internet connection.

Freely however, is internet connection only.

Yes I know, that’s why I specifically mentioned the catch-up services smile
