Have a sore tooth, apparently part of the side is exposed, hot and cold hitting it is very painful, its usually ok but sometimes its there and makes the side of my face hurt, not the worse tooth pain I have had but annoying.
The dentist keeps lashing some stuff on the side that he then puts some UV lamp or something on, then instructs me to put some sensitive toothpaste direct onto it.
Done it twice now, second time he put three coats of the stuff on and gave me a prescription for Colgate Duraphat 5000 and said give it a few months, only been a couple of weeks but doent seem any better.
He mentioned a root canal being the next option but was a bit reluctant to just book me in a sort it, said its a bit invasive etc but to be honest its annoying me now, i try to avoid it but if something hits it, boom, I get referred pain up the right side of my face, again not horrendous,
He admitted he doesn't do many root canals so not sure if his opinion is based on his skill set or its him giving it due process with a low impact solution tried first.
Its NHS and think its geared to check ups that last like three minutes and fillings, not anything more involved.
Am I best just finding a private dentist and saying root my canal will you (oo err missus) and just pay for it ?

Root canal will be £900ish, make sure you go to someone who specialises in this and has the correct equipment.
The you will need a crown, around another £900.
Then they will tell you there are no guarantees it will work and the tooth may need to come out anyway.
Lots of conflicting opinions on this, lots of people will tell you just to have it pulled out as it will be less painful and less hassle in the long run.
On the other hand people will tell you there's lasted ten years before it had to come out.
I suspect the root will die soon and you will need to either have the root canal or tooth pulled and an implant {£3 to £4k} fitted. If you are in severe pain for several days which then suddenly stops you will know the root has died.

Cheaper to come and have a holiday here in Spain and get whatever you need done at the same time.
€800 for an implant inc. crown.
I had an emergency root canal a few years ago and it was €350.

Had a root canal done yesterday, the relief is amazing !
Only had the first treatment, needs some more work but its like a switch has been flicked, it hadnt been as bad of late but still quite painful and sensitive but can barely feel a thing now.
I guess thats what happens when the nerve is removed, now need to unlearn not eating that side so I dont set it off, took some bottle to swoosh cold water over it after months of that eventuality causing me a sudden sharp pain, then a dull ache that takes ages to subside.
Was expecting more in the way of pain from the procedure after but its barely perceptible.
Had this and recurrent gout in my left foot at the same time, both now treated and its nice to feel normal again.

Having also had a root canal relatively recently, I agree with the relief! I wasn't looking forward to it at all (I mean, who does?) but honestly the procedure was infinitely better than I thought it would be.Only had the first treatment, needs some more work but its like a switch has been flicked, it hadnt been as bad of late but still quite painful and sensitive but can barely feel a thing now.

I have to say - if I had gout and a toothache at the same time, I'd be set to murder
