when they were thinking about doing the ring they worked out the traffic patterns

This was what they had in mind... A ring round the city...

The M8 split a west and north section and a south and east section. The M74 would have come in and caught the ring as the south east corner.

I've wondered before what Glasgow city would be like if either they had not installed any of the urban motorways or if they had actually completed the plan...

just now its in-between - the plan wasn't completed so the road doesn't quite serve the original design. 1/2 of the ring means that the inner section of the M8 is way over loaded. This was seen when the M74 opened it released a lot of the snarled traffic....

The original plan would have had a lot more motorway miles in Glasgow and this would have complemented the design. as it stands what is there struggles to meet the demand.

If it wasnt there then they would have gone with the ring road round the city. that would have served everything but the city. people would have been using the park and rides and getting the bus or tram into the center. national traffic would not have had any need to go through the city. but what about the transport requirements of Glasgow itself, getting a three seater into the tube... nah... still a need for decent transports in the city.

all the traffic surveys said the ring road yup it would have helped but it didnt serve the city well, so a design for many motorways was made.

it could have been like this, but it was stopped before it got the chance to finish. and that means that there are areas in glasgow now gridlocked as it cant clear the traffic. Imagine if the system had been completed. even if it had been taken to 3/4 built instead of 1/4....

But its not. And that we suffer.
