I've been using masking tape but getting a fair bit of bleed on removal. I'm painting the lower half of the hall, stairs and landing a separate colour, so need the transition line needs to be really crisp.

Frog tape. Not cheap, but worth it for good quality painting.

Frogtape.

But to get a really clear line you have to first paint on top of the masking tape (and the transition edge) with the colour you’re masking and then you paint the other colour. That way any bleed is the masking colour, not the contrast.

I'd been using frogtape, but bought some of this and found it very good as well - a bit easier on fresh paint than the frogtape:

ProDec is good gear, but there are different grades of frog tape (yellow, green, red) which vary in their adhesion.

Frog tape.

We got really crisp lines and pretty sure we didn't over paint it first. Just make sure it's firmly pressed down.

Thanks for the replies. I'd hoped for a consensus but I guess I'll just have to give the Frogtape a go anyway....

Similarly, i've moved to using this. Great stuff in my experience.
