I have a Blair electronic bagpipe. They cost about £510 so when I found a second hand one (broken) for £100 I bought it. It has three problems:

Battery is shot - I can fix that
One of the finger sensors is broken - I’ll get to that
The screen is broken - I need help

It has part numbers 1602ASWC and P2191026-12-A102 (I think) printed on the back.

It looks like this:

My Google-fu has run out. Does anyone know where I can get one please?[

That you can’t find any bits for it is the internet trying to tell you something….

Yeah probably. I can send it off for repair but the DIYer in me wants to have a go first!

Good effort!

Clearly the 1602 refers to a 16 by 2 character display. I'd be curious to see if the ribbon cable disconnects from the display, and if so, what the interface looks like. Also the size of the display. I imagine you should be able to get close at that point.

One presumes they at least have a volume switch? Or even a headphone jack?

Successful Endeavours are an Australian electronics design firm, they’re surely going to use off the shelf components for their hardware designs.

Got to be worth an email, they should be able to tell you the supplier and part number

Good idea. I think I will start with the guy who designed it and sells them if my googling tonight fails me. I know someone who knows him so it may be easy enough to get one from Oz.

My last post before I bore everyone to tears! Better than bagpiping you to tears I suppose. The display appears to be fairly easy to get hold of (thanks Mr E) but it would appear that it has a custom ribbon attached to it. The photos below show the ribbon on the broken one and how it is attached to the display.

Does anyone know how these things are attached? Is it bonded? Soldered? In other words, could I (in theory) remove this ribbon from the display without damaging it and attach to one from which I have also managed to remove the standard ribbon? I’m guessing not. I have a heat gun, solder and magnifying glass but not much else beyond that.

I think you need a tame electronics bod. Not insurmountable but ‘fiddly’ at first glance.

And no. All cool. It’s a cool device, it’s an interesting thing and resurrect/fix/reuse is absolutely what we should all do.

Soldered - but with very fine pads, and then covered with a silicone for insulation and reinforcement.

I'm going to guess that the actual part will come with the ribbon cable however.

Thanks all. I’ve emailed the manufacturer/owner and asked if he’ll sell me one.
