Afternoon all,
Just sharing a bit of good news!
I've been at my current firm for nearly two years; they took me on only a couple of years after I qualified and they've given me an absolutely superb level of exposure to the industry. Whilst there are so many bad points that the job is almost laughable, the amount of experience has been worth its weight in gold.
Having entered the industry relatively late, I'm trying to make up for lost time earnings-wise, and where I currently work, there's not much room for progression. My supervisor is an absolutely great guy but he's definitely not moving anytime soon, and realistically, the only progression would be his job.
The travel is also very significant - despite being based in North Dorset, I can travel pretty much anywhere across the UK. I definitely spend more time behind the wheel than I do on site, which is pretty frustrating. Monday will see me in Berkshire, Greater London, and then West Sussex, for example.
I applied for a better-paid, more local job for a relatively new (5yr old) company just after Christmas and was invited for an interview on Tuesday. Definitely like the sound of the new place and of what the guy said.
It went pretty well, but I was in significant pain; as the day progressed, it got worse, and then I got taken into A&E. Turns out, I have kidney stones.
Anyway, heard back and got offered the job at a good level (circa £10k increase in salary from where I am now). Really excited to see how it progresses - it's always nerve-wracking changing jobs, or so I think, but let's see what the new place brings!

Kidney ultrasound tomorrow (having recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure at the grand old age of 35) so hopefully they will have a look and tell me that the kidney stones have passed. Went from needing Oramorph and Co-Dydramol to nothing, so maybe they have!

Must be the water in North Dorset that causes it I think (nothing at all with my diet/lifestyle has!) If you want to progress into something else, fire and security is a great place to move into, there’s a real shortage of engineers so always looking for them in install and service.
Some companies you’ll first fix and 2nd fix and others will be commissioning only
But in most you’ll get better perks than a spark, for instance I get a van, all tools and only cover an area a hour from home usually.
Good pay and door to door travel too, plenty of training as well as there’s such a shortage

Thanks very much - had some experience of fire and security where I've been. But that sounds like my new gig - van, hour from home, decent times, door to door travel. Good heads-up though - will bear that in mind. To be fair, my current job had a van as well, and what seemed decent pay at the time - but it's stagnated, and the travel is really getting to me now.
The furthest I'll be going from North Dorset is Southampton/Portsmouth, with the vast majority of work in Bournemouth/Poole (about 45 minutes from home) in the new job, where as Southampton/Portsmouth were my local areas in the current job!

Ah nice! That's on our list when we look at moving. What do you drive? I'll keep an eye out! I'm in a blue 320D 13 plate estate (normally filthy!). And a BMW R1200GS Adventure with my panniers and top box on all the time.
We love it, only been here since September. Currently drive a 24-plate Peugeot Partner, until next week when I change jobs, and wife and I have a 67-plate white BMW X1. Ours are both filthy too, goes without saying. I've washed them both once since we moved in and I'm not doing it again until our development has finished being built!
