I’ve noticed an increasingly worse area of what looks like scratches /scuffing ion the top of one of the wings of my car.

It seems to be gradually getting worse with time, and not with washing…… when it is washed, it’s done very carefully and the rest of the car is fine.

Weirdly, one of the two areas (see below) is affected in a very defined area, with a clear “border” of defect.

I can’t feel any scratches with fingernail….. and I’m starting to think this pattern is actually the composite material of the wing starting to come through? The pattern looks the same…

Is there a way to remedy this?

How would such a pattern form over time from within the paint, as it doesn’t polish out (by hand) and cannot be felt…

clearcoat failing , it might well polish up a bit temporarily

possibly had a paint job with cheap materials or had alot of sun exposure , will eventually start falling off

Yes as above, the panel has been refinished at some point in the past and the finish is failing.

Thanks for the above.

When I zoom into the picture, it looks more and more like fibres over lapping and weaved amongst each other…. Is it definitely the clear coat?

Not sure if can be made out clearly on the close up below….. it looks as though the coloured paint is “sinking” into the fibres of the composite wing? Is that possible?!

It was flawless a year ago

Sanding marks from a previous repair underneath the final finish. Shrinkage/sinking is revealing them.

Had it once on a car which seemed odd as it had been owned from new and never put in for any repainting. Worked out that at one strangely long service when the car was still relatively new, the main dealer had damaged the panel and had it repaired. At the time the explanation for the delay on the car being available for collection from service was waiting on a couple of items that hadn't been delivered to carry it out.

You said the wing is composite & one of your pics shows what appears to be a crack in the material of the wing.

I'm not entirely convinced that it is sandscratch & it may be to do with the composite.

Has the vehicle had any paintwork in that area either in your ownership or by a previous owner.

I suggest you pop it into a good bodyshop & ask for their opinion.

No crack in wing in above pics. It’s had paint in its life for sure, but I don’t know about this wing. I’ve had it for a few years, nothing in my ownership and this pattern was not present at all until a year ago, and has slowly gotten worse. The upper smaller area is weird as it has a very obvious but soft /blended border where the paint is perfect on one side and then cross hatched on the other. It really does look like interwoven fibres to me. Just at a loss as to how that’s showing through now when the paint hasn’t been damaged/scuffed /washed badly! Likely a previous painting defect then, slowly showing itself.

Will see what a body shop says

What's that semicircular mark in the middle of your pic?

That’s the weird pattern in the paint! To the left, fine, to the right, it’s gone like that, with the hatching underneath frown

Then a larger area of the same pattern down towards the headlight.

Edit to add, there’s no crease and no detectable roughness with fingernail on either area.
