Myself and two others are off on a hire-boat holiday in France this year. I hadn't thought much about insurance until one of us got an offer from Admiral (he uses them anyway). £67 for three of us, £5K cover. But I haven't seen the small print.

Is that good or are there better places to go?

I assume you mean travel insurance?

We are currently with Admiral, although not claimed with them. Be careful to look at individual item cover, not just total. I lost my wedding ring 2 days into my honeymoon last year and a £500 max single item claim made it not worth claiming.

Myself and a mate are off to Istanbul, Cappadocia and Cairo in a few weeks - bit of an 'Ancient Aliens' tour.

Admiral did seem to tick all the boxes with their travel insurance. I went for a 12 month worldwide personal policy (excludes USA, Canada & Thailand) with Gadget Cover bolted on for £7.00 - £45.00 all in which does seem pretty reasonable.

It remains to be seen how they perforn should an unfortunte event require a claim.

If their proposed cover is sufficient for your needs, then £67 for 3 of you doesn't seem a bad deal.

£5k covering what?

Cancellation, late departure, illness, valuables, your dog, cash etc.etc. Most travel insurance (if that is what you are talking about) will be more than a fiver but have more comprehensive coverage (ie £1m for hospital / sickness cover)

Just use comparethemarket or one of the various alternatives and you'll get a whole stack of comparisons for price & cover.

Ultimately I'm not going to spend hours online trying to save a fiver, but would like to know if the above seems 'about right' or not. Does it miss anything important? I rarely go abroad so am not sure.

That will probably do. Looks OK.
You should always apply for the insurance on the day you book the holiday so get the application in.

Thanks very much.

Is that because the price will go up?

No…because once you have booked it, then there is a possibility you may not be able to go (think illness, close relative illness/dying etc.) which will be covered and therefore you won’t lose financially.

Insurance is largely for medical, cancellation etc.

Valuables and cash are usually not covered unless in a hotel safe so theft from a car etc is usually excluded and the excesses are often so high, it's pointless claiming.

I've had cash and cameras stolen from a locked hire car but never claimed as the excesses were too high and the money obviously wasn't in a safe.

Did your house insurance not cover it? Ours did.

Valuables and cash are covered- think bag snatcher or pick pocket, as are cameras. Just choose a policy with a small excess- think ours is £100 and with decent coverage

My friend has finally managed to book the insurance with Admiral. The cover runs from 11-20 May.

Except our holiday is 10-20 May, starting with a ferry from Portsmouth.

When I pointed out the mismatch, he said 'I’ll worry about the ferry- if that sinks, just tough! I was most concerned with the eventualities that are hard to deal with, ie, that is when we are in France.'

My view is that the full period should be covered in case one of us is unable to go for some reason. Let's say one of us breaks a leg or is otherwise unable to travel and so we lose the holiday. I'm guessing the insurers will say 'Tough, your insurance doesn't start until 11th'.

Am I right?

Your insurance covers you from the time it is taken out for the things you mention although the insurer may have an issue when a potential claim is submitted when the holiday start date is wrong.
If I were you I’d just go here and take out you own policy for what will be a minimal cost
