Hi,

I’d like to take my wife away for the weekend to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. It would need to be UK based, maybe a fancy country hotel with a spa and decent food? We’ve done quite a lot of London hotel stays , Savoy, Dorchester etc so I thought we’d have a change. We’re based in Buckinghamshire.

Any recommendations?

The Newt in Somerset? I haven’t been I must admit, but I do like the idea of spending a weekend there.

What do on your days away would give more of an idea what hotel needs to be near unless you just stay in hotel all day

Cliveden ( Berkshire ) has all that as does Baliffscourt ( Sussex ) although more of a pain / drive to get to.
No spa but Lords of the Manor in the Cotswolds not too shabby.

Not been to the Newt to stay, but the garden is amazing and the Roman villa bonkers!

Having stayed at about 90% of the hotels already mention in this thread, I would put The Newt at the top of the list.

My wife and I stayed there for a night last summer, on the way back from a wedding in Cornwall and without hesitation I would recommend it 100%.

Our room was at The Farmyard. We were initially sceptical about this, but came to prefer it due to the privacy and compact facilities located there. You’re away from the attractions near the Main House and a couple of km down estate roads, where day visitors cannot access, so this keeps it private from the larger main house. There’s a help yourself bar and lounge area, indoor swimming pool in an old barn and a relaxed dining area. You have use of golf buggies to shuttle yourself around. The hotel areas and grounds are all marked private and for hotel guests only, so you can get some peace and quiet after wandering around the estate. Spa area is a healthy size and has all the facilities you would want. Staff are all very friendly and helpful, with the majority of them being locals. They all seem to have a real pride and passion for the project, which is nice to see and hear them speak so positively. We were only stayed for a night and agreed that you really need a couple of nights there to appreciate everything and make full use of the facilities.

Food at the main restaurant was fine, but I must admit they certainly could step it up. They really should have a 1* restaurant, or to that standard, offering based on what you are spending per night to stay. I was recommended a few places in Bruton, so would probably go there for dinner next time we stay.

It is a truly remarkable example of revitalising an old estate, in a conscientious manner, with what must be a fairly limitless budget on hand.
