Storm Eowyn - Forced Business closure - make back hours
Discussion
Folks - need some advice.
Red Weather alert issued for Friday 23rd Jan in Northern Ireland due as Storm Eowyn approached
My employer issued statement to all employees that they were closing for Friday23rd due to the red alert - however employees would be expected to make up the hours missed over the next week.
Cue negative feedback and On Monday 27th they extended the timeframe to make back the hours to 2 weeks.
Question - can they legally force us to make back the time given the voluntary decision to close?
Due to the nature of the business Working from home wasn't an option.
Can't find any info on the net to say in black and white yes they can or no they can't.

I suppose they could but seems a top piece of s
thousery..
Government advice was not to travel unless necessary blah blah the usual script so hard to argue against it from your employers perspective, a bit like travelling to a country in conflict against the advice of the foreign office you can do it but you’re on your own

I suppose you could look at the contract of employment - is there any provision in that?
As above, pretty awful behaviour from the company - not an action that's going to make people feel at all positive about the management.
Arguably the employees were ready for work, willing to work and it was the company's decision not to open - not your problem. Try all putting in a sick note?

Don't happen to have lots of red vans do they?
No, nothing to do with delivery of goods. Its a factory setting with multiple sitesUnderstandably i'm not naming my employer.
Yours isn't the only company doing it.
I’ll start by saying I have been self employed for 35 years so I have a certain mindset and I recognise that employed folks don’t always see things the same…….
It’s not your fault that you had last Friday off but was it really a "voluntary decision to close"?
Presumably they will be sucking up a significant loss in sales/production and wouldn’t do that by choice. It sounds like they are still paying you for the day that you did not have to work; would it kill you to do the hours they are paying you for, even if it is tacked on to some other days?
