So I've been with my current employer for just over 8 years now. And frankly I don't like where the company is at the moment. (made a significant loss last calendar year!) I don't rate my current manager (compared to the guy that hired me) nor the culture the current one allows to occur. (slack!) I also don't like that I'm being forced to take on more than my fair share of responsibilities whilst others swan about. I don't like my commute which is now well over an hour each way. And I don't like that I've earned less the last 2 years than the years before.

What I DO like is the half decent basic. But with my bonuses decreasing over time I cant guarantee it every pay slip like in the past, but I expect to get "something" most months. Worst case I can do some overtime @ time and a half to top up. But I feel I'm not far away from quiet quitting. Which is pointless.

So I've started looking for a new job. Had a couple of interviews late last year. 1 I rejected straight away as the basic wasn't high enough.

But the 2nd is in a different industry to my current one. The basic is near as makes no difference the same. But there's no way to make more if I need to for an unexpected bill. There's also night shifts expected and I've never done full overnights before and I'm not sure if I will take to them. There's a better pension scheme and a decent perk on commuting. Its also slightly less hours per week. And its far closer to my home. 15mins each way.

I was told at interview (and I believe them) there's far more opportunity to progress in several different directions. I'm not daft. I know this new role is a bit of a reach. And there is going to be informal training involved.

Frustratingly, although they've verballed offered me the role and emailed to say as much. (before Christmas!) No contract has been forthcoming for me to peruse and I have no start date for me to work towards in terms of notice period. And its that delay that's giving me doubt.

My gut is to take the risk. No point in doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. But I worry that the hit on my pay (probably something like 5k a year. Which for reference in 2020 was probably nearer 12k!) will bug me as time goes on. And if I don't take to shift work for whatever reason will make me wish I'd never left my current job. But then I also know if I stay on the ship that's taking on water I'll regret not going for it

Why is it never simple? laugh

You don’t have a new job yet, it’s just words, until that happens you can’t make a decision. It’s nearly February, surely if it was real something would be here now?

The company promising jam tomorrow can't offer a contract today.
There is no jam today, therefore there is no jam tomorrow.

Keep looking OP, the next opportunity will be better.

As above.

Keep looking, stay at the current place. Jump when something better presents itself

Thanks everyone. I always wonder in times like this. If they are slack before the job, what are they like during the job!

FWIW the managers that interviewed me are claiming "HR problems" are delaying everything. This is a nationally known company with thousands of staff.. I doubt its 2 interns in an office with a couple of laptops.

Great question! Company performance during the selection and hiring process can be a useful window in to overall performance and culture. It’s their opportunity to shine and your opportunity to assess that performance to help you come to a decision.

There are some similarities between your employer and mine at the moment.

The past two years haven't quite returned the profits hoped for and therefore some projects have been put on the back burner which has put a dampener on things.

I don't think we are alone however and I think many, many businesses are in the same boat.
Times have been challenging over the past 5 years and technology has moved on at an alarming rate - almost to the point I feel there is some kind of paradigm shift going on.

At the moment, I am staying put - despite things not looking strong.
The "work / life balance" is good, the role isn't too stressful and the salary is acceptable. Combined with a short commute, there are many advantages.

Far too many stories of out of the frying pan and into the fire at the moment, one of my friends has changed role 3 times in the last 12 months.

However, that said, you will always find a way to make it work. I made a silly mistake a few years ago by leaving a good company, hindsight is 20/20.
