Hi all

Thanks in advance for any suggestions here. As the title suggests I’m planning to buy a 991.2 Carrera S in the next month or two.

I’m a Porsche fan generally the last being a 997.2 Turbo and I really desire the 991.2 CS. It’s the best combination for me of 911 attributes, modern looks/interior/tech and value for money. I love the idea of a N/A 991.1 CS for the engine noise wail but they’re just getting a bit long in the tooth to my eyes and I know if I got one I’d be trading out of it within a year whereas the aim here is to hang onto the car for 5 years at least.

The reason for the question is due to my circumstances. I live in central London and have a young baby. In reality this restricts most of my driving to fairly mundane schleps down the A3 to the golf club. Most longer journeys are in the family car with wife and baby. This means the added 911 practicality of rear seats/shelf and storage over some competitors isn’t as important (but rules out R8 or similar because I don’t want golf clubs on front seats/in passenger footwell. So whilst I want a 911 could I be better off in something still fun but more comfortable?

These are some of the alternative thoughts I’ve had so far. Budget £60-65k so some of these are previous models:

BMW M850i/M8
Merc-AMG SL63AMG
Bentley Continental GT Speed
BMW M4 comp
Aston DB11

Thank you interested to hear what people think!

The Bentley and Aston will cost you a fortune to run. A friend of mine has had both and has recently tried to sell me his DB11 but I told him I couldn't afford it if anything went wrong.

The Bentley (he's had the W12 and the V8) are great cars but like a drink! Again, if anything goes wrong it's pretty much an engine out job and will cost ££££ even though it's basically a VW. If you're handy on the tools then some jobs you can do yourself cheap enough by cross referencing the Bentley part and VW part. Lovely cars though.

Needless to say my friend is most probably going back into a series 4 Conti GT as he needs the back seats.

If it were my money I'd buy the BMW or an Aston from a main dealer as part of their "Timeless' used car program but I don't think you'll get into a DB11 for £65k

I had a SL63 before my current 991.1. The SL pre the current version has no back seats.

Given the 991.1 is 200 HP down on the SL I can confirm the driving experience is night and day. I drive to Les Mans on a regular basis. I was in my SL and my mate was in his 991.1. Going I led and could not drop him at any point. Even we we hit double the limit in the UK. On the way back I followed him.......I could not keep up in the curves (note this is an autoroute so we are talking high speed curves). The driving experience in the Porsche cannot be compared to the SL. Forget what the car journalists say. There is no comparison.

If you are going for the current SL then you may as well get a standard BMW or Mercedes coupe. The new SL is just a fat overweight GT car pretending to be a sports car.

I owned a 991.2s 2016. Now have a 992. Also had a young baby when I had the 991.2.

Don’t even think about it , get one, just get rid of the p zeros as soon as viable for something better.

Bang for buck they are great. More poke than the base, lovely interior, car play…

Good luck.

But note there is known problem of the turbos failing on the 991.2. It is a not case of if but when and the cost is between 10-12K. Therefore if you go for the 991.2 make sure you have the OPC warranty.

Internet st stirring. Mine are A1 as I’ve protected the underside. Otherwise these cars are very strong. You can have a warranty or unleash the massive potential in the car with tweaks. There’s no wrong answer. Enjoy it.

That’s absolutely not true about the 991.2 -

I bought a 2016 991.2 4S Cab in 2021, with 24k miles.
Since then I have driven it all year round as far north as the Hebrides (good job it has front axle lift) and as far south as Turin. Now showing 42k miles.
It has been a fairly expensive experience, but worth every penny, YOLO.

The oil pipe feed is a known issue that affects the turbos on the 991.2 C2S.

It's a known issue, but only a small percentage of cars have failed.

I would agree though that this would lead to the suggestion that a warranty is a good idea, especially given how cheap and lengthy the Porsche one is.

I’ve a 991.2 (C4S) which I’m very happy with and I’ve also had a BMW 850 on loan for a couple of weeks. The BMW felt huge, like navigating a barge! So keep that in mind if you’re going to be driving around multi story car parks or old towns, villages. Can’t comment on the other cars.

I’ve personally seen 3 991.2 with smoking turbos… hardly internet nonsense. Well known issue.

Thanks for the input everyone. Had the discussion with a mate and another contender has gone into the mix, possibly to the top of the list. The 2019 onwards Aston Vantage with the AMG engine.

Anyone had one, had much experience of them? Overall I think they look awesome. Front headlights aren’t perfect for sure but you can’t have everything. They have depreciated hard and pushing the budget to £70k or just over gets a low mileage car from a main dealer.

Thoughts?!
