I've recently started a new role which involves a 55-60 mile commute each way (twice a week). It's 95% dual carriageway/motorway miles too but I'd like something punchy off the mark.

With two young kids and various sports on weekends, I'd like something with some decent boot space.

I have a driveway so a charging point is no issue.

Ideally, I'm looking at low mileage used and around the £25k mark. As far as I can see, the main options that are available are Tesla (model 3) & E-tron without knowing much about what else is available.

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Family sized and half decent range on that price range.

Skoda enyaq
Kia ev6
Hyundai ioniq 5
Mustang Mach e
Polestar 2
Toyota bz4x
VW id4 or 5

And probably a few others. Personally I went for the enyaq after trying the above. It had the best boot by far, felt better put together than the VW equivalents.
The Korean cars have better charging technology for sure but I couldn't quite get on with the shallow boots for a family car.
Mustang just made me feel sick (not sure why). Toyota was just so dull.

E-Niro has good range and tonnes of space. A bit lower rent than the Tesla and Audi offerings but it'll be a solid, dependable family bus.

When do you want to buy? Because Jaguar IPACE used prices are likely to fall over the next 60 days.

A mate has recently got an enyaq. I'll see what his thoughts are.

Out of interest, any idea how a tesla model 3 boot would compare to the above?

No rush. Possibly a couple months so that would time well. What's the reasoning behind the price drop?

I wouldn't say tonnes of space. It's decent enough but ultimately it's an Astra/Focus sized car.

Quite a lot of the quoted boot volume is under the false floor, so if you remove all the polystyrene crap from the (usually unused) spare wheel well you do gain a useful amount of space.

Solid and dependable though, yes, I can certainly vouch for that. Mine is coming up to 80000 miles now, range hasn't noticeably dropped at all, and it's had nothing other than suspension bushes under warranty (inevitable consequence of an 1800kg car and terrible British roads).

64kWh model is the one to go for. The smaller battery has a relatively poor range and also less power (130-ish bhp versus 200 with the bigger battery).

As for lower rent, what, than a Tesla? Not a bit of it. The Kia is far, far better made. Interior is conventional looking but very solidly put together with decent materials. My drivers seat (leather) still looks like new. The couple of Teslas I've been in feel horribly flimsy and cheap, although the drivetrains were certainly impressive.

Just be aware that it's not a sporting car in any way shape or form. Handling is typical FWD understeer, and it's got more power than traction - which can occasionally be quite amusing in a scrabbly 80s hot hatch fashion.

On paper the model 3 has loads of space, some of it is in the front. The kicker for me is it's more saloon than hatch which doesn't work for me personally

IPACE is being EOLed.

Autotrader has a lot of £37 to £44k almost new iPace that were dumped over the past week or so.
That's almost half price from SRP. That will have a knock off effect on second hand prices.
You don't want to pay £30K for a SH car when new is 10K extra.

Tesla Model Y is available at the top of your budget, and prices will probably drop now that a refresh model has been launched. Way more practical than a 3 for a family car as the hatchback gives loads of boot space

Revisting this.

Slight change of plan since I noticed that used, low milage (<5k miles) BMW I5 deals are pretty good at Synter (locally). Ruled out Tesla's since this post due to...well...him. Which is a shame.

Is it as obvious as demand that makes the I5 cheaper than I4...etc? Seems like a lot of car for your money?!

Lots of Enyaks (pre-reg/pre-facelift/pre-£2k tax hike) for a decent price.
Last Sep I purchased a well specced Jan 24 Enyaq for under £30k (under 5k miles Skoda head office car)
Couldn’t be happier with the car!

I'd be a bit wary of handing over £40k+ on an 18 month old EV, especially one that's a large saloon, as still has the potential to lose a lot of value over the next 18 months.

As a example, I bought a 3 year etron 55 sportback last week with 35k on the clock for £22.5k. That cars list price when new 3 years ago was £80k.

I think I'd be after a KIA EV6 for this brief, or a VW ID7.

How about a Mercedes EQC?

400hp so plenty punchy, not as big as the etron but still very practical, high quality interior, 200 miles of range.

£26-27k will get you into a 22 plate car with < 25k miles

Shame you've ruled out tesla because of one person, the MY is still the best in class, it's cavernous inside.

The i4 isn't great for rear passengers although the interior quality is better than the tesla.

The ev6 is probably what I'd look at now depreciation has made prices more sensible, and has a decent warranty.

Too many scare stories on the eqc and eqb, makes the ipace look well built.

For performance theres also the smart #1 brabus. Looks awful and crap range but might be worth a look. Dealers are still asking for an optimistic £27k for a year old example, dont think anyones dared admit to owning one.

Good shout - we really like ours, 250 miles in summer. Bargain at the price as they were £81k list end 2023.

How many miles do you get out of your EQC on the motorway in the winter with heating on? I've seen numbers as low as 150 miles thrown about by people driving them.
