I want to dictate some thoughts, lets call it an essay for convenience, then save it as a file and print it off - if I want.

Can I do that? How?

At home I use my iPhone. Open notes, new note, tap the mic button bottom right on the screen and start talking. Open note on MacBook, print. Simples.
I use otter.ai at work.

I have an iPhone and a Windows/Microsoft Word PC. How should I proceed, please?

As above on iPhone open note, click mic, start dictating.

When finished, highlight and copy text, paste into an email and email to Windows PC. Alternatively you should be able to log into your iCloud on the PC and open the note, copy and paste the text into Word.

Use the in built Notes app on your iPhone.

Click - new note - microphone symbol

From there you can export or use AI to improve grammer / style etc

Edit - lee recommended same thing.

I have been having a fiddle with voice dictation (if that is what it's called) I have found 'Voice In' in the Chrome web store, which gives me a microphone symbol in the top right of the screen. I click on that icon and talk. This seems to to be the simplest way to do it.

If this makes me sound as though I am feeling my way in the dark, it is because I am.

Why not use Notes? Its built in to iOS.

Very straightforward to manipulate and export from there.

Just for an example, I dictated this whole sentence in Notes. Once completed, I just cut and pasted the whole thing and dropped it into the post on piston heads.

Couldn’t be simpler.

Open the iPhone, swipe down from mid to bottom screen to open the search and look for notes.

Also fine. It was the “copy/paste/email yourself bits that seemed unnecessary”

That was just an example if you want to cut / paste / export.

When you type on any app / email / message on iPhone you have the option to dictate to text directly. Just by pressing the microphone button.

So you can dictate straight into Word if you so wish.
