I'll be travelling through Zurich in May, and will have six hours or so between flights into and out of ZRH in the middle of a weekday. Looks like it's only 10-15 minutes to get into town proper.

Where's good for lunch?

What do you fancy, and as it’s Zürich, what’s your budget hehe

A few ideas near the station…

Fondue https://www.fribourger-fondue-stuebli.ch/

Sausage and Rösti in interesting setting https://www.zeughauskeller.ch/en/home

I’d keep it simple. Old town beer hall. Schnitzel and sides, few pints, potter around and back on the train.

Thanks for that, Zeughauskeller looks interesting.

Budget I'm figuring 50CHF-ish, I can't really go too heavy on the drinking as I have stuff to do later, so food and perhaps a beer or two.

Just figured it was a more interesting layover than sitting in an airport lounge for a couple of hours!

Zeughauskeller is a complete tourist trap, but for good reason and plenty of locals visit too. It’s normally top of the list when we have first time visitors. You’ll be in budget for a main and a couple of beers.

Unfortunately you’ve missed game season. Zürich style veal (item 47 on the menu) is the traditional dish of Zurich and is similar to a stroganoff. The cordon bleu are decent and I’d recommend a Rösti as a side.

It’s about a 10 minute walk down the main shopping street from the main station or the tram stop Paradeplatz is outside. If it’s a nice day, after lunch, continue down the same street for a couple of minutes and you’ll reach the lake.

ETA as you are on your own, you may end up sharing a table.

To wrap things up, I did indeed go to Zeughauskeller, and fuelled myself up with sausage and rösti washed down with a beer or three.

Did nobody mention Bauschanzli ? Sorry OP I would have sent you there if I read the topic previously, perfect place for lunch in May.
Impressed if you got a decent lunch for 50Chuffs these days.
It used to be about 35Chfs for decent portion of chips, large nuggets and a pint in Paddys over a decade ago!!

Errr May is doing what it always does in Zurich… it was 27 degrees on Friday, storms over the weekend, non-stop rain since we landed on Sunday night until lunch today. Assuming the OP was in town this week, al fresco dining was not on the menu.

Nuggets, chips and a pint at Paddys will still cost you about CHF 35. Inflation is for other countries wink

I think it was 44 francs for the food and three 400ml beers.

Glad you enjoyed, 44Fr isnt too horrible. To be honest, around 25Fr is about the going rate for a meal these days without drinks.

Those Zurich prices don’t seem to be (too) bad value – but maybe that’s just sausage & rosti.

We’ve just spent some time in Geneva and of course I knew it wouldn’t be cheap but f*ck me it was eye-watering. I like to think I’m reasonably well travelled but it was by far the most expensive place I’ve been and that’s for absolutely everything that we used/consumed. I’m usually a believer of the ‘you get what you pay for’ notion but not in this case as I can’t say that anything was of any superior quality – quite the opposite in some cases. (the trains did run to the second though wink )

Places like Annecy & Chamonix that we visited just down the road felt dirt cheap by comparison.

We had a great time though.

Damn, I need to give my mate Not Quite So Big Neal in Zurich a yell and get back out there! Helsinki is now making Zurich look cheap hehe!
