Best cat litter...

The cat litter from my local supermarket is comprised of hard white chippings. It's not very good at absorbing the smell of urine, and the chips get stuck in the cat's paws and scattered on the floor ready for me to step on with bare feet.

Is there a better brand?

Breeders use chicken feed. It’s cheaper than cat litter (an alarming piece of information IMO).

We use World’s Best Cat Litter. Not cheap alas. But good at what you want it to do.

A covered litter tray is also a pretty good thing.

I use (well, my cat does…) BreederCelect. It’s paper based, rather than clay, so makes less of a mess and is more absorbent, so less odours.

I use Sanicat clumping. Scoop (and sweep) daily, full change weekly.

Agreed, and she did, but she's 14-15 now, and after losing a nasty fight to a psychopathic Siamese she won't go outside any more.

I use Amazon Lifelong corn litter. World's best fits the description but Lifelong is a fraction of the price and 90% as good.

Having collected two new kittens yesterday they were using this, so far seems much better than the Catsan we used recently for our last cat, no smells and cheap too.

Looks very similar to the BreederCelect stuff I linked - how much is it? If it's significantly cheaper I'll give it a go.

We used to use the Catsan prepacked stuff with built in liners, but it got bloody expensive for our two gannets and they didn't last long before needing changed.

We know use this stuff - much cheaper and clumps well, doesn't stick to the cat's paws either so mostly stays in the litter tray.

Felight, it's in a pink bag, looks like Catsan but is cheaper. It's almost always on offer at Sainsbury's making it even cheaper than Catsan.

I think you can get it in The Range as well but Sainsbury's is normally always easiest for us.

Thanks very much for all the replies and ideas. I was going to go for the Pet Smart one but CBA to set up an account, so I went for Amazon Lifelong corn litter. Arriving Thursday; we'll see if Furbag appreciates it!

Worlds Best Cat Litter. Looks expensive but lasts forever so is actually good value. Worth every penny.

We have used wood pellet fire fuel for our last two (until they were allowed outside). Works brilliantly, much cheaper than cat litter, and makes a great mulch for the garden after use. Our local cat rescue put us on to it.

Just popped back to say that the Lifelong Corn Cat Litter from Amazon is brilliant. It smells slightly like malt when you open it; the cat was thinking about eating it until the smell wore off. But:

Pound for pound it's cheaper than the stuff in the CoOp.
It doesn't get stuck in the cat's paws and trampled all round the house like the stuff in the CoOp.
The cat no longer digs her way through the liner resulting in a wet tray that has to be taken out and hosed clean.
There's no odour of stale urine like the stuff from the CoOp.
Clumps can be removed and a little fresh litter added, so it's economical to use.

We have three litter trays and get down a 30 litre bag per week. Two bags for £20.
