Seiko 5 hairspring?
Discussion
I have a nice little 2 tone seiko ladies automatic date adjust that I picked up as a bargain project and a little something the wife could enjoy after some repairs. Sort of thing that boxed is circa £200 new.
I had refixed a mixing numeral that was inside the case, plus replaced a damaged glass, otherwise its a pretty tidy thing!
Gonna buy her a boxed diamond fitted Seiko anyway but I have an OCD thing about making things work, and have sorted a few other watches I have.
Given how cheap it was and they are I'd sooner get her another boxed one but still tickled to fix this if I can but economically putting it for automatic service just doesnt stack up
Observing it runs better when face down and balance doesn't seem to stop. But trying to adjust time seemed to be tenuous where it became not starting and under more careful observation seeing perhaps the reason why may be some slight kink in the hairspring?
Would this explain why it might struggle to continue running face up or perhaps certain angles though whilst not such a problem face down running?
Wonder to whether to try and persist with it or just bung back on the ebay for somewhat more than it came as part working, I've tried to do good by it so far making it somewhat better than when I received it ( though was for next to nothing, less than a tenner so far after glass repair)
Cheers Bazza. I realise its very much an uphill battle of learning, though prepared to give it a go at some point, maybe I need to get another movement swapped over as easiest option. You can only stand to lose and in my case, lose a few pounds.
I don't have many tools, but interested to acquire more if I decide to try more fixing
I already have some decent proper screwdrivers already which I used on a quartz mechanism swap job on a Rotary I had where battery swap didn't revive it. You need patience with watches.
I had the whole movement for like £14 or something for my Rotary that also wasn't worth a full service on a relatively inexpensive watch I think its mostly mint and boxed but Elite Quarz probably only £50 on like new from what I've seen on ebay. So I do try to put my hand to stuff.
I actually had a mess with balances before, just playing about learning about watches so I have respect for how difficult they are.
They were only 2 decade old fake Rolex which my dad punted to me for a laugh.
My dad had already messed with one and by looks of it made a mess of the hairspring. So I made sure to make an even bigger mess.
I still have the cases for x2 of them, one seems like a fairly decent chunky sub style and was thinking of putting a different watch face and mechanism etc. I have a working one too, funnily enough its very good on time as I ran a timeographer app and it appeared to be working as well as my Orient Pepsi
Ok back to the Seiko 5 - even if I manage to break the mechanism there are no shortage of these on ebay, might get a better working one maybe devalued due to glass and case scratches etc so I'm factoring that in also.
As mentioned about to get another boxed very similar for a gift anyway though so it doesn't really matter. I'm just OCD and get very into fixing one specific thing at a time for some reason.
Thankfully not got to her broken clutch car yet, its too cold lol
