According to the Beeb we will be getting driving licences on our phones...anyone expect it to work properly and not be National ID cards via the back door? If the currently .gov.uk websites are anything to go by, it'll be a bag of excrement and yet another money pit

The mad rush from ILTR to eVisa is months behind and still full of snafus apparently. FIrst deadline 31 Dec 24 now end March 25. Pssup in a brewery.

Clearly eLicences for many more people will be a piece of cake

I did, yes.

All the government online services I’ve used in the past few years (DVLA, HMRC personal and business, company registration, NHS various services) have been excellent and the overall gov.uk site is an exemplar of usability and accessibility.

Don’t understand why you think ID cards through the back door or otherwise are an issue.

It is a benchmark for many sites. Even MOT/VED is very easy to use, by example.

Indeed, my only gripe with it is that it takes the nonsense cookie rules very seriously and as it runs multiple subdomains you get a lot of cookie accept banners.

Its good for accessibility as well; my friend is partially sighted and he say these sites work very well with his screen reader.

Because the whole thing seems to be about ID, just because driving licences are mentioned , the rest of the article goes on about ID and the requirements of the EU for digital ID. That's what it is, a national ID card in your phone by any other name.

I think I know the company behind this technology. They developed it using block chain and the idea is it will be used to verify identity across a wide range of use cases (tickets for concerts, CVs, age, travel). It is in essence a digital ID. When I did some very basic work for them we discussed the idea of not using the data to profile people. While that was the aim to get government support it basically meant letting them see the data.

So yeah could idea for convenience not so great if you like privacy

Not sure I see how someone who uses a smartphone can be unduly concerned about privacy.

It isn’t a national id cars because not everyone has a driving licence.
