Microphone connector help, identification...

Hi all,
I've purchased a Android box for my Jag XF, super pleased with it apart from the microphone. When I hide this little connector (pictured) the system does not pick up anything i say. Now that I've exposed it, everything is OK, I don't like where it's placed.
Question is, what is it and can I buy something to extend it? If not, can I just cut and extend it or will I bugger something up?
