Hello all as the title suggests

I’m looking to get rid of my trusty l405 for a CL63. To me they just look absolutely stunning.

How unreliable are they? I’ve never had a CL.
How common is the ABC failures?
Do they m156’ in the CL’s suffer head bolts and the other camshaft issues & injectors like the c63’s?
What history/work should I be looking for when buying one?

Now the main one, how terrible is it on fuel? What will I be averaging in London. My l405 is the only economical car I own and contrary to popular belief, it also has been the most reliable

All help appreciated

If you are looking at 6.2 cl63 not the 5.5 then headbolt issues were on the earlier engines. I think there is an engine no range on the web somewhere.
I like the shape but they are massive cars, make sure you see one up close, to me they seem to photograph small.
6.2 are old now, pre 2012 ish. ABC is great when it works but can be a proper pita to fix once it all gets a bit crusty. You'd like to see one with work done.
I'd look at a newer cl500 with the 4.7tt engine. 435bhp isn't shabby and they can be mapped to another 100bhp+ quite easily. You'll lose a little of the amg tax on the parts/running but it will still be a nearly £100k car in running costs so not cheap.
I can get 30mpg from our 5.5 m157 but only 23-26 from the previous 113 and 113k engines so I'd think the 6.2 will be mid 20s at best.

An engine with issues in a car with issues biggrin

Engine: Head bolts, cam adjusters, injectors, and if unlucky worn out cams and lifters
Car: ABC, random electrical problems, general issues.

The CL is pretty but not well built; it's a high specification, average quality car.

Fuel economy is not a strong point. My 5.5 averages 20. The 63 will be 15-18. In a purely urban setting I'd expect 13 from the 6.2.

I’ve just sold my 5.5. Owned it circa 6 years and it was totally reliable. Never had any issues with it.

Fantastic car, beautifully elegant and built to last

Why isn’t the CL63 ‘as well as’ rather than ‘instead of’?

Have your cake & eat it!

They’re very expensive cars to run but very elegant and comfortable as others have mentioned. I ran a cl500 for a year and I had a few issues with it which were expensive to repair so once it was back on the road I decided not to keep it. The best memory was blasting along on the autobahn with the massage seats on. They’re very well insulated and can fit 4 adults quite comfortably. Also check out Bentley gt, very similar experience.

Well, ended up with this instead. P31 performance pack plus with the sls internals along with the optional LSD.
Drives absolutely fantastic. Although averaging 14/15mpg around town so I suspect the injectors will need doing soon.

Truly brilliant car you have there!! The W204 C Class is the last of the built to last generation of merc.

Add to that engineering prowess a 6.2l V8 and the recipe is complete! bow certainly cheaper to run than a CL... even with such terrifying fuel economy!

Thank you!
I must admit, it does feel a lot more of a car than its other competitors in its class. The 7G gearbox suits the car and powertrain perfectly which surprised me a lot.
But this thing is heavier on fuel than my SLS which is fairly worrying!!!

Sounds like it may be overfueling a little... has it had a remap? My friend with his 2014 coupe is averaging high teens around town and mid 20s on a longer run. When he bought it, his had a pops and bangs remap that made those numbers even worse! He very quickly stuck it back to factory.

Ive been fortunate enough to drive a couple of SLS (and an SLR) and they simply blew me away! I have a desperate want for one... maybe one day... if I sell everything I own biggrin

Hmmm I think it may possibly be mapped. It’s got a set of miltek secondary decats. Could possibly explain it!
Will be wanting to go back to standard
