The OH's dad has a Feb 2017 Fiesta 1.0 with approximately 60k miles. Today it apparently started juddering and the oil light came on. He had it recovered to the garage who told him the engine was borked and it isn't worth repairing.

A bit of digging online using the reg suggests the car is a Fiesta Zetec T. Some more digging suggests it might have an Eco Boost engine. Apparently these have/had a "wet belt" which was supposed to last 150k miles but, in fact, starts disintegrating prematurely and fills the engine with crap, though this was supposed to have been fixed in 2014.

Just wondered if anyone with more knowledge of Fords (I have none) agrees that it's a write off so I can tell the OH what to tell him. He isn't really interested in cars and he doesn't do the internet so he'll just accept the first thing he's told by the garage.

If its started to knock then its pretty much new engine time, if the oil light has come on and it hasn't run then start by pulling then sump off and looking for metalic oil, then pull off number 4 bearing cap and look for scoring. if its picked up its knackerd.

On paper its a 10 year interval, if its serviced on time and with the correct oil they will make it.

Ford were originally selling brand new engines for just over £1000 but it seems they have stopped that. I've got a 2013 one with a seized engine that i'm going to stick on ebay. Prices vary as to its value, i've seen 2016 Fiestas go for just over £1500 for one with knackered engine.

No chance of it being serviced on time. He buys cheap cars, doesn't have them serviced as "garages rip you off", and then replaces them when they die! He's had this one four years. His previous Focus lasted at least 11 years under the same regime!

I suspect the best solution is to tell him to get his next car serviced when he's supposed to!

As long as you use the recommended service intervals and the correct oil - Meets Ford WSS-M2C948-B

Yeah, that's what I'd say... not getting a car serviced and expecting it not to break!

I thought I was risking it by going over the due date by a few months !
