Hi All,

My better half has ordered a wooden arch for the garden - it'll require some small amount of construction.

It'll be sitting on a pallet in the garage for a few weeks, before it goes out to the garden, so I'd like to give a couple of coats of some kind of durable and colour-less wood protection.

What would the PH Massive recommend, as the best product to give the wood some degree of long-term protection ?

Thank you.

From the blue green bits, that wood looks to already be tanalised. It'll last for ages even if you don't do anything with it.

Boiled linseed oil, apply yearly!
It is not expensive.

Osmo UV protection oil 420 clear satin.

I used this on some cedar out in the garden about four years ago, needs a recoat every year on vulnerable areas (like the top of slats), and every couple of years for the rest.

Still looks like new with no grey patches.

I use this it’s not too runny and lasts well.

Ronseal do a 3 coat wood paint. Done properly it’s great. My shed is 8 years on and no signs of rot.

This one I think

Its most likely to rot out where the posts enter the ground even with them set in postcrete, bitumen paint on the bottom section maybe. A clear treatment on pressure treated timber will still weather to grey in a few years in my experience. I quite like Bartoline Cerocote which is oil based and cheap, bit smelly for a few weeks after application but resists water well.

Use a clear primer/sealer that sinks into the wood. Don't use anything that just sits on the surface, as it won't last.
