It's time for the annual gathering of the non-Apple faithful, where the congregation looks deep into the Xmas credit card bill and says 'yeah, whatever, I deserve an upgrade anyway'. See previous year's at https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/forum.asp?h=0&...

Samsung S25 series announcement is due on Wed 22 Jan. As usual, pretty much everything of interest has already leaked except final prices (though rumoured to be +100 Eurodollarpounds on last year), and the sweeteners that will be thrown in for the early buyers. Stick your email in on the Samsung website to get a £50 off voucher.

Having drop-kicked my S21U into concrete last year, in a manoeuvre graceful enough that it should have earned me a guest spot at the Bolshoi, I thought I would try going down a size and bought an S24+. Which was....fine ? But the zoom camera was clearly not as good, and I missed having stylus input on exactly two occasions. One big reason I rejected the S24U was the squared off frame, which looked very uncomfortable to hold. Samsung seem to agree and have gone back to radius corners for the S25U.

So I think I'm in for an S25U in the tasteful pastel blue, chopping in the S24+. I'm expecting list price to be £1599 for the 512Gb, so probably £900-£1000 cost to change with vouchers and day one discounts, less whatever the value of the freebie item is that they throw in (will it be earbuds, or a fridge ?).

I have a S21U so I have 1 year left of security updates so I'm on the fence about changing. Since the S22 it has been spot the difference between each new phone and the 25 is the same, feel slightly underwhelmed by it. I will watch the launch event to see what the offers are (free buds for me with the 21U) and trade in value is. If I am not swayed I may wait to see what the s26 rumours look like and if it is yet again a "spot the difference" update I may just get a S25U in the November black Friday sales.

My son just got an S24. It's much bigger and heavier than my S20. Not keen on that at all.

If you know someone with a bluelight card or a student card, they usually get at least 10% savings too.

My S23U was my first samsung since the Note 8. Pretty much blown away by how it good it is and prefer it to my other phone which is an iPhone 15 pro max 1tb.

Got itchy fingers to go for the S25U if the offers are really strong. I don't like the number 26 so it's a 25 or 27 for me. I know. I know.

I hope they offer something else instead of ear buds for free.

I made the mistake of going from a S21U to a Google Pixel 7a which is garbage..

I'm still on the S21FE, which in fairness is still doing well, apart from the battery which I've been meaning to change for a while now.

I'll keep an eye on the S25, but from everything I've seen I really cant see the point in upgrading. Think I'll hold on another year and go for the S26+.

A lot of people complain that they're very similar to the previous years, but I actually quite like that. The designs are pretty good now, so knowing what you're going to get is quite nice. Although I would appreciate them putting a bigger battery in rather than shaving 0.001mm off the thickness.

I was hoping there might be reason to upgrade my standard s22 to a new s25, but from the specs floating around there doesn't seem to be much benefit.

your son must have a s24 plus or ultra because the standard s24 is smaller than the standard s20

I see. Didn't realise there were different versions. Thanks for clarifying. I'm glad to hear that as I don't want anything bigger when I come to changing it. The special phone pockets in my jackets are already redundant.

I went from an S21U to an S24U. I like the squared off frame, the missus has my hand-me-down S21U, and it looks old fashioned being curved, well, it does to me.

And yes, the zoom is quite amazing, so I'd not want a downgrade to that either.

Stylus - I can take it or leave it. Leave it really, as I never use anyway. At least it's built in however.

Currently have an S23 Ultra and looking at the S25, not because it's massively better than my current phone, but I assume my phone will be out of warranty next month (2 years from when I bought it from the Samsung website).

The jump from an S21FE to an S24U will be very noticeable, never mind an S25U - imo

I'll be going for the plus version, I'm just not a fan of the ultra primarily due to additional price and having a stylus which I wouldn't use rather than a bigger battery. I also really dislike the shape, although the S25U looks a lot better so I may reconsider.

I'm sure I would find a difference, but the S21FE still feels smooth and fast enough, and I'm someone who likes new shiny stuff, but only when it's sensible. It's far better than my works IPhone 12 for example. The one big thing I'd like is more storage though, 128GB isn't enough and it's almost full.

At the launch there is a good chance they will have an offer of double the storage so if you buy a 128gb phone you will get a 256gb.

Sorry, I meant on my current phone 128GB isn't enough. I meant it's one of the reasons I'd look to upgrade to a new phone.

You're right though on the deals, I always used to buy my phones from Amazon a while after they came out as you got a better deal that way, but recently I think you're better off going for the deals at launch. The prices don't seem to come down as much as they used to on Amazon etc.

Yep, there's very little in price between an S23U and an S24U, for example. Certainly from what I've seen anyway.

I'm currently rocking an S22, which works fine, but due for the obligatory upgrade later in the year, so obviously the latest S will be the likely choice.

My only complaint about the S22, and has been since day one is battery life, even with quite a few graphics adjustments etc, it still gives me the mobile phone equivalent of range anxiety, so I will be interested to see how the new one fairs in comparison.

Same here, I like the compact size and performance that you can't get elsewhere. But my s22 does struggle with battery life on a busy day. A decent improvement on that battery life and a good upgrade to the camera would be welcome. However, battery and camera specs have barely changed in the 3 years. I think more efficient processors may help a bit on the battery front.
