The indicators have been working perfectly up to know. Suddeny the stalk won't latch down when idicating right. It is ok when indicating left, any thoughts on what could be wrong?

Sounds as though the indicator stalk is being stopped by the plastic bit (don't know the technical term)that fits onto the column and looks like a ring with a bit sticking up. Either the stalk or the ring may have moved.

Could also be something broken in the stalk.

Which type is it early or late (they have different methods of return, do you have wash wipe on the column)

Hi Adrian,
it is a 1978, no wash wipe on column.

A simple check to see if the traffic canceller COULD be in the wrong place is to look at the steering clamp (which is the clamp above your knees in the car)this should have the bolts pointing directly up or down when the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position (down is the correct postion and this is set by the top steering UJ splines, see note below), if as you said they were working then this should be OK. Remove the shroud and the 2 screws that attach the switch then check that both the tangs and springs are still attached to the switch,(if not replace the switch) if so look at the column to ensure that the canceller is not 180 degrees out (it is a clip that fits to the column and can be on the wrong way around) if all this is OK then the switch needs replacing back onto the column but ensure that body is then pressed into the column (if the switch has been loose then over time the holes elongate). NOTE ..the wires that attach to the switch are soldered onto a PC board and to do any more than looking, THEN the column fascia clamp needs to be removed to release the wiring AND if you need to remove the column centre clamp then this should be removed and replaced correctly as this is a safety critical item and also then the steering wheel height needs to be reset to stop the steering boss from clashing with the columnn and the horn going off.

Had a look today and found the holding screws for the mechanism loose. The bottom metal leaf spring that the stalk latches into had come off the holding pegs and dropped inside the steering cloumn. Got it out refitted it and bingo, working again.
thanks for the advice,
G.
