To start - my intentions are entirely in the spirit of this thread https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... rather than this sort of thread https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... I'm just too frugal to spend lots!

I'm really just dipping my toe into grown up watch wearing, about 18 months ago I started wearing a watch after not having done so in the last 20 years. I just went into Argos and got a fairly plain Lorus analogue watch(the Lumibrite face makes me smile everytime I see it light up, simple things/simple minds, etc) and an equally cheap Casio 'divers' style watch. Luckily both feel really comfortable to wear, so all good.

Then I decided to ask for a treat for Fathers Day (for a change) and so went slightly up in the world, with a Festina chronograph - which I like the look of, but sadly just doesn't feel comfortable on - the case digs in a bit, as though it's too big.

The Casio has now been snaffled by my Dad (he was clearly eyeing it up whilst recovering in hospital a few weeks ago, so I handed it over biglaugh), and I need to make some suggestion with my birthday rapidly incoming...

The Lorus is perfectly comfortable but looks a bit small: 35mm case
The Casio was very comfortable: 44.6mm case
The Festina not so good - but basically the same as the Casio: 45mm case

Is there a trick to sizing? Or using different strap styles for different size cases? Of course, now I know James Bond wears a NATO watch strap, i'm desperate to risk a few quid on an eBay special...

Surely the answer is go in a store and try a load on? I've landed on 39mm as the perfect size for myself (with pretty small wrists) which is handy as it seems to be a size currently 'having a moment'

Not sure what price range these start coming in, but micro-adjustment on bracelets is worth looking at too. I previously had a leather strap (my first) and hated it, just couldn't get comfortable. I've now got a bracelet coming with on the fly micro-adjustment which I will be able to make comfortable.

Don't forget lug-to-lug is important too. I tried on 2x 39mm watches before deciding, and one with a much bigger lug-to-lug just didn't sit right for me at all.

I know you're right - but i'm far too considerate and given my price point don't want to waste anyones time!

Thanks for the other points, I had no idea micro-adjustment on bracelets existed, and lug-to-lug is probably the problem with my Festina (vs the Casio) now i've considered it....

That Casio wears smaller than the quoted case size. The lug to lug length and shape/curvature of the lugs are just as important.
My sweet spot is 39-41mm, and anything over 42mm too big in general but the Casio was fine.

Wear what you like, I’ve got watches from 34mm to just under 58mm.

Loads of on line jewellery places have show it on my wrist things, other than that get yourself to a shop and try some on.
