Having a lot cabin installed, the electricity supply will come from the house but can I have a meter installed so I know exactly how much electricity is being used?

Wouldn’t report it to the electricity company as the usage will be counted on the main house meter anyway

Would you need a separate consumer unit in the cabin to do that?

My garage has power and I consumer unit type thing for the lights, sockets and solar

Yes, you can seperately meter its use, but obviously the main meter will still record the combined consumption

Couldn’t you put a CT clamp on the power line going into the garden room and monitor consumption that way?

No ideas for a name

Just as extra info...
In case you are imagining a large sub-meter similar to the one supplied by the energy provider.

You can get DIN rail mounted meters - which would go inside your consumer unit - at either 'end' depending on what is best.

Also, it can be intrusive - in that it is wired so that current passes through, or can have a current transformer clamp.
Of course the CT type still needs to be powered, so still gets connected to the supply.

We've got a similar setup in our garage, main meter measures total usage of everything and is what is reported to the supplier, second meter in the garage measures just what is used there and is for personal info only. Previous owners used to run a business from the garage so assumed they needed the info for business costs etc

Are these the din rail mounted meters mentioned?

I can only find ones which say phrase 3, I’m unsure whether that means it can support up to phrase 3 or if it only support it, I’ve messaged the seller to ask

That's 3-phase (not phrase), and not what you want for a domestic supply. You want single phase.

What will you be using in the cabin?

A few LED lights won't add up to much and it's easy to work out.

If you want to know what a heater or dehumidifier is costing you, a simple plug-in meter can do that.
There are all sorts of 'smart' energy monitor options.

A conventional 'meter' is not always the best answer, you may find it useful/interesting/<a whole new hobby> to have info logged over time, so you can see what each thing has cost you this week/month/winter

Beyond that, we may be getting into 'if you have to ask, you shouldn't be fiddling with it' territory....?

Too much faff.
I would just put one of those plug in consumption meters on the big items in your log cabin (Not the lights obv)

Dehumidifier/ Fan/ Aircon/ heater etc.

It will soon tell you what you want to know.
