Ford Focus Mk2 2011 Washer Jets

I have a 2011 Ford Focus, old mk2 shape.
I recently realised my windscreen wash jets were not working, it had only recently passed it's MOT so I presume has only just happened.
I checked all the fuses and they were all ok.
I decided it must be a dead pump so had a mechanic change the pump. He told me the old pump was running slow and the filter at the bottom of the washer bottle was paritaly blocked so this was cleared.
However, still no joy, the old and new pump do work when connected to a live feed, but not when your press the stalk.
He left the new pump on as he said the old pump would was not working well. He went through all the fuses etc and could find nothing wrong. I did try the stalk the next day just to try and it did squirt the screen but only for a few seconds and has not worked since.
I tried a replacement stalk, but there is nothing, no sound of the pump or anything.
As it stands now, my mechanic feels it is an issue with the cars mangement system which could be expensive so he is coming back at some point, I hope this week, to put a direct live feed and switch and I will have to use the washer jets that way, but I will lose the rear washer jet.
Has anybody had anything similar and have any suggestions. I would prefer to keep it standard but it also needs to work.
I don't think it is connected but I only noticed this issue after replacing the battery after I found the car had a flat battery.
Timescale from MOT, I assume the washer jets were checked and working then, and the flat battery and then jet not working was about 2/3 weeks.

The pump on my 2006 Mk2 Focus went, replaced with a scrapyard pump, worked until the engine didn't.
Are you getting power to the pump? - 12V light bulb across the leads at the pump, or if you wire the pump straight to the battery does it spin. Do I remember correctly that if you wire it in reverse it pumps to the rear window?

Yep, the old pump worked slowly, the new pump works as well. The thoughts after fitting the new pump were either the stalk or the GEM unit. The stalk had been checked now which really just leaves the GEM unit. Rather than mess with that, I have asked my mechanic just to put a switch direct to the washer pump, will only work the front but I think it will be easier and more cost effective.
