The UK’s City minister Tulip Siddiq was given a central London apartment by a person connected with the party of the recently ousted Bangladeshi government.

Siddiq, economic secretary to the Treasury, was handed a two-bedroom flat near King's Cross in 2004 without making a payment, according to previously unreported Land Registry filings.

The filings indicate that the donor was Abdul Motalif, a developer and associate of people linked to Siddiq’s aunt, the deposed former prime minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, who is leader of the Awami League party.

The King's Cross property, which Siddiq still owns, was purchased in January 2001 for £195,000, the filings show. A neighbouring flat in the building was sold in August for £650,000.

Under-fire Treasury Minister lied about £700,000 flat gift TWO YEARS ago as she faces calls to quit amid bribery scandal

Anti-corruption minister Tulip Siddiq was under pressure to quit last night after it emerged she had lied about receiving a London flat as a gift.

The Mail on Sunday has repeatedly asked Ms Siddiq if she was given the two-bedroom apartment, now worth £700,000, previously owned by a property developer connected to her Bangladeshi dictator aunt.

She has denied it was a gift, instead insisting that her parents had bought it for her. She also threatened the MoS with legal action.

Does Anti-corruption fall under her role of Parliamentary Secretary (Economic Secretary to the Treasury and City Minister) at HM Treasury ?

Quite funny if it does..

Yes she's responsible for tackling corruption in UK financial markets.

I was just reading this on the Mail - looks grubby as hell quite honestly.

Doesn't seem to be getting much coverage though.

From a very low bar, the most lying, forty faced, hypocritical, incompetent government that we've ever had to suffer.

Labour do seem to love a flat paid for by someone else.

She's currently under investigation in Bangladesh for her alleged involvement in a £4bn fraud

I thought you were going to say she's under investigation in Bangladesh for being part of a dubious organisation in the UK called the Labour party biggrin

That was reported a couple of weeks ago.

I suggested back then she might be gone but apparently not and not a lot of noise about it either.

Seems a very strong argument she should at least stand aside or be stood aside whilst that's investigated especially given the latest report.

Don't think that we'll see many of these in this thread.

Just imagine the reaction if it was a tory (anti corruption) minister previously who was alleged to be doing the same.

Jesus. The state of it.

It'd be like a denial of service attack was happening to this place.

1) She *currently* lives in a £2.1m home owned by a senior Awami League member
2) She still owns a flat gifted to her by a developer linked to the Awami League (h/t @rafeuddin_ )
3) Her mum lives in a £1.2m flat gifted to her by son of “corrupt” billionaire and Awami League politician now in custody
4) Her mum and sister lived in £500k flat owned by another Awami League politician now in custody
5) She owns £860k Cricklewood home: no link but Siddiq broke rules by failing to declare renting it out when she moved into Awami official’s house two years ago.

Bet the register of interests and conflict of interest declaration makes for some interesting reading.

All looks entirely legitimate
