I'm looking for a LHD Land Cruiser or similar to bring back to the UK and then leave in Europe. I'm based in the UK, and the used UAE ones generally look to have very good specs, and cheaper than European ones. What's with the ones that are advertised for export only? There seems to be loads of them.

Anyone any ideas?

Obviously works for me. Just curious as to where they've come from or why they're export only, and who usually buys them.

Not many round here anymore so maybe someone will correct me.

I believe the Export Only tag is a loophole where the dealer doesn't have to register the car.
The new owner can register it locally if they wish.

Who buys them? Hindu Kush warlords for cash.

You need to be very brave buying a used car from UAE after the flooding last year. These could have been sat in an underground car park in 1 metre + of water.

Cheers Bezerk.....

I didn't know the angle around the registration, there's not a huge price difference between the export only and 'normal' ones.

Great point about the flooded cars. Never even gave that a thought! I bet there's loads of flooded ones doing the rounds in used car lots!!

they will be either:

- cars that once upon a time were sold new in the emirates but can now no longer be road registered. no paperwork with owner no longer around to sort it, repaired write-offs and the like. this is however the least likely, as there are many means of getting around this.

- changing rules meaning they can no longer be registered due to market protection. grey imports and the like, such as when al naboodah successfully got the govt to ban registration on grey market VW ID's.

- in the main, the dealer just using dubai as a trading post. based in al awir freezone [so no import/export duty], bought in from asia, for sale into africa and the like. mostly sold to the trade but they will chance an ad in uae. you are free to pay the duty to RTA it, i know plenty who have. i also work in africa and see ex gcc cars regularly, our pool car prado is one.
