I wonder how much is related to development costs of the G-Line.

And the prices of all their range.

10 years ago I was quite happy to buy a new Brompton, since sold.

A decade older, wiser and now paid more and I can't justify the cost of buying one new.

I’ve had a few Bromptons over the years and whilst I have no need for a folder now, the new G line appeals but I can’t get past the price.

Cars and bicycles are due a price correction. The buyers aren’t as flush as the manufacturers believe.

Turnover down 5% and units sold down 8% doesn’t explain that sort of swing in profit though. Yes, they had to do a recall and I’m sure there’s costs of developing and marketing the G series but not to that extent.

I think the previous 10.7m profit was a record high for them too.

That depends.

You cannot move for ten grand bikes in SE both on and off road.

But Brompton are a utility, the G one seems a bit silly to me, and utilities only get replaced when they break - Bromptons are well built, ergo they don’t break - I can’t believe anyone buys multiple products from them.

I also think that where they’re quite useful (London) - hire E bikes have really kicked them in the balls. A lime bike for 99% of people is a better option. And they’re sodding everywhere.

Nobody needs a 10K bike, apart from pros. The whole industry is messed up, and too performance orientated.....

Nobody needs a Ferrari either.

But it’s the performance marketing Which is exactly what keeps people buying new ones. Brompton can’t push those same buttons to get people to upgrade, as what’s the point.

One issue I see at the moment with Brompton is too many models and choices.

It must be baffling as a dealer when you have A, C, P, T and now G line

Plus 2, 4, 6, 12 speed plus now 8spd on the G line

The G line I really like but I struggle to see the market, Brompton for me has always been about size of the fold etc, G line is massive.

Also price wise, £2500 for a folding bike with a steel frame is no matter how you look at it a lot of money.

They need to slim the range down and look at the pricing, a basic C line 6spd is now £1500

G line has been 5 years in development so any profit drop will not be down to it.

People love buying stuff and then try to justify it. We all do it.

Fair comment.

But the performance marketing is easy on a Ferrari. More power, more torque, less 0-62 time.

On a bike, if I bought a Ultegra equipped biked for say 5k or a DuraAce best of the best for 10k. I'm still going the same speed on my various routes. In fact I'd benefit more from 5k of training and dietary coaching than the difference in the actual machines.

Its like CeramicSpeed jockey wheels. ZERO difference to anyone on the planet! Doesnt stop people spunking their money on them

I know, was genuinely interested in the differences/uses of the bikes.

But people ‘think’ they’ll go quicker because Specialized told them the new Tarmac is 26% faster in wind conditions only replicable in a hurricane.

Lewis Hamilton would be quicker than most in any car the same as Pogacar would be the fastest rider on any bike. But human nature is to want more performance to boost their own ceiling of ability.

Brompton don’t appeal to any of those traits which is basically what keeps men buying st.

2 Bromptons here, only buy via Cyclescheme though, as half price via my scheme.
Favourite one is 6 or 7 years old (raw lacquer finish).

Resisted buying a 3rd! Don’t like the new type & regular ones little different..
