I have a very nice 2002 E46 318i SE that I use as my only car, so I need it for work etc.

I keep reading that the VED rates on our older BMWs are likely to increase in the next Budget ?

I have several months left on my road tax, which will take it into May.....

So my question is ...how realistic is it to declare it SORN , and then 're -tax ' the car soon afterwards with the current tax rate ?

Is there a minimum period for a SORN to be in place ...?

I have never SORN'd a car so it's all new to me !

Any advice most welcome !

VED rates tend to go up every year, and your's is probably band H (£305 or £25/month) or I (£335 or £28/month) currently.

So, I'd say no, as the planed increase (of £10) is likely to be less than the cost of losing a month's worth of VED (£25-£28) as you won't get any refund for the current month.

My advice would be (if this is what is making you wonder) to completely ignore the "SHOCK HORROR! New road tax rates up to £2745" that are regularly seen on "news feeds" as they are talking b0ll0x.

Not saying you are, but just saying, just in case you have seen this "headline" touted around.

This is for newly registered cars.

As the poster above says they may go up by £10/year, not worth the hassle.
