Has anybody else had this?

Needed to return something to Amazon (defective item). Selected the local petrol station which means I don't need to box it up (I've returned stuff there before). The location was provided to me by the Amazon shopping app.

But the petrol station said they can't currently accept returns. They said the same thing happened before Christmas - they were told by Amazon not to accept returns. Then they could for a while, now they can't again. She said to try again in a week.

I have a month, and can try other places if necessary but it seemed a bit odd. Plus, although it's not a great deal of money I can't get a refund or replacement until I can return it.

Its the holiday season. priority is given to delivering packages not to collections/returns back to normal after the new year

Isn't the return period extended after Christmas?

It's the standard month. Which is plenty of time - especially if it is just so they prioritise delivery over return and it will be ok again in a week or so.

It just means I have a defective item that I'm unable to return for a while

I would guess that's nonsense. It's more likely that there's some reason they don't want to accept returns - possible a system issue, possible a capacity issue (do they have space to store all of the stuff?

In my experience no-one knows how couriers work at collection points and you can't really blame them for that.

Perhaps. But personally, I don't think they would have embellished the story to say that it also happened before Christmas, then the restriction was removed, now it's back.

Yep, I like them too - fast delivery, (normally) easy returns if there is a problem. I once returned a set of CCTV cameras - after about 2 years of use - because the manufacturer changed the T&Cs, so the "lifetime free storage" was removed and you now had to pay a subscription. Which made the cameras useless unless you paid. Amazon allowed me to return them and refunded me.

Regarding my original post on the thread - I returned the faulty item yesterday (same location as I originally tried) and have been refunded.

With petrol stations they often store packages on random spare shelves they have. As you can imagine they run out of space quickly, more so when someone brings in a 8ft clothes airer to return.

I also imagine - I could be wrong - they get more for deliveries than returns, hence their stance

Time of year I suspect, although why a specific location who knows. Maybe an issue with collecting it from them or something.

Not something I've encountered. Although I have used their pick up service to return a couple of items. I bought a grit guard (for car washing) which was broken. Did a return and our regular postman collected it. I assume he's not going to pick up heavy stuff but I've done this twice now with smaller items.

Was this the Shell garage in Farnborough? I went there this morning to return an item to Amazon, having selected this specific garage on Amazon, and was told they are no longer doing Amazon returns. Luckily, the Shell garage in Fleet are still doing them.

It was actually........... the Shell garage in Fleet. But as of yesterday, they were accepting returns again.

This happened to me and I was told that they did not have any of the pre-paid Amazon issued packaging left and to come back later in the week when they were expecting deliver. I did and it was fine

Not Amazon returns, but had quite a few times when sending stuff by Evri or similar where the 'label printer/scanner isn't working'. I
do suspect is more can't be bothered or not much room to store it. Not sure what sort of fee shops get for acting as a parcel point?

My local Evri drop off shop are great, they have always taken parcels because I print my own label at home and stick them on but I have seen them decline people who only have a QR code to scan in store and print a label out so I assume often it is a label printing issue

A local place to me that does amazon amongst others has said the same ... its nothing to do with Amazon though, its the space the parcels are taking up in the shop between collections by their couriers thats the problem, so their solution, refuse them!

Makes sense I guess but its a right ball ache!
