Hello!

Does anyone have any experience working for National Grid?

I was speaking to someone last year who seemed to absolutely love it. I've been looking for jobs locally but nothing much comes up but now something is being advertised, a higher apprenticeship so it pays 25k a year which might just be possible for me to drop down to.
The problem is that I have a mortgage and a young family so totally restarting is not generally an option.

Anyway, what are they like to work for? The wages seem good after completion of training but what's the rest like? If I got the job I would be based in the field.

A bit of background, I have a degree and a master's degree but I spent a few years after COVID doing manual work. I'm now back in the office but I'm not cut out for office work I don't think. I much prefer being out and about getting my hands dirty.

Is it transmission or distribution you're looking at?

Subbed for them. They were good payers and good to work for. They look like a great employer for direct employees. They are very hot on procedures and following rules, so you have to be wired that way, some people dont fit that mould.
The number of training courses was a pita, i am not good at sitting at a desk all day, i end up feeling sleepy even though the content is interesting enough.

I often used to pick up or drop off staff on courses at their training centre near Eakring.

Very rarely did I hear any complaints from them, in fact the common denominator in conversation was that they were a very good employer, albeit this info is now around 10 years old.

Hi

No experience directly of National Grid but the electricity industry is a good place to be. There's good job security, good pay, usually lots of opportunities to earn more money via standby etc. It's a very health and safety/procedure driven environment but all the training etc is provided. It tends to rely on the individual being proactive and self driven to get ahead.
There is generally lots of opportunities for advancement and progression should you wish to pursue it. Once you get some experience and authorisations under your belt there's a lot of opportunities for working with contractor firms and around the world. The work is varied and no two days are the same.

Downsides? Can involve a lot of antisocial hours and there's an expectation to be available during bad weather etc, most roles will probably involve some sort of contractual standby commitment.
Being outdoors and hands on is all fine but you'll be out in all weathers and it can get old real quick! Especially hunting for an HV overhead fault in driving rain at 2am.

Just apply and see how far you get?

I applied and I'm doing to assessments and online interview today. We'll see how it goes!
It's a shame all the trainee roles are apprenticeships, albeit quite well paid apprenticeships. I can only go for one!

I wouldn't worry about that too much, companies get grants from the Government now for having apprenticeship schemes, so therefore every trainee role in my company has now been converted into an "apprenticeship", even the schemes aimed at graduates and experienced people. We have apprentices in their 40s!

Best of luck! smile

I'm hoping the link is still open tomorrow, I wanted to do the interviews tonight but my baby has been howling all night so I've been helping my wife with him.

Families eh!?

I'm from Devon, I want to be involved with infrastructure, especially power distribution/generation. It's what I find interesting and I also have a bot of a family history in it, not that history counts for anything.

LFE?

Know someone in the stores at NG, speaks highly and been there years. Even in the stores he was smashing the overtime for last storm, linesmen made a fortune if they wanted the hours. They paid for accommodation for guys to come out of area to help as partially badly hit here. They also had the local good food supplier in to feed everyone, apparently was 2.5k a day in decent food provided to make sure the guys were good.

Sounds like a decent firm, guess depends on your line manager like a anywhere

Missed out because Google says I'm more than a certain time away from the depot. I used to drive there every day so I know that it's within 45 minutes.

Shame.
