We have
Black bin---general waste every 3 weeks
Blue bin----recycling every fortnight
Green bin---garden every fortnight
Food bin---weekly
Do the operatives stick to waste type or route? ie same crew each week? Or is it a bit more random than that? Are they allocated shifts/routes or pick and choose?

We have
Black bin -Fortnightly
Green bin - Fortnightly (alternate to black bin)
Garden bin - 3 weeks but day after regular bin day
Food bin - weekly
Glass tote - Fortnightly with Green bin
The green and black are picked up the same crew.
The garden bin is a seperate crew
The food bins are a seperate crew with a little bin lorry.
The glass crew are seperate as they have a square shape lorry.

I am very much into bins with the old boy next door
We both have a big black bin when in reality we should have a small black bin each
Then (don’t tell anyone) we found a stray big black bin walking the streets and we adopted it
The third bin we share for extra bulky stuff that would fill our bins usually- which would then required booking a slot at the tip
Just this morning the bin men took the there full black bins
We position the two regular bins in pole position, then the third stray bin randomly in the middle to confuse the bin men
I am pleased to report 50% of the time they take the extra stray
Need to mark the 3rd extra bin as I think a scallywag neighbour will strike and steal it

Is it the same crew just driving a different lorry? Or do you have a separate glass crew covering all the routeHuzzah said:

There's nothing random about waste and recycling collections. It's a very precisely worked out endeavour where everything has to be fully optimised. This takes into account things like the capacity of the waste truck, avoiding collecting from busy roads at peak times, minimising the milage covered and so on. Each local authority area has designated rounds. Each round will comprise between 800 and 1,200 properties. The same crews tend to work the same rounds as they get to know the various nuances that often exist. Sometimes crew members are swapped over to cover absences on other crews.

Waste collection makes zero sense to me. Previously we'd get two lorries - one for waste collection & one for recycling, usually on the same day.
Now the same crew come, collect all the bins and put it all in the same lorry (seemingly without any kind of pre-sorting)
Most likely they're using a split loader like this:Now the same crew come, collect all the bins and put it all in the same lorry (seemingly without any kind of pre-sorting)
Or, if food and garden waste are being collected separately, rubbish and recycling can be collected mixed together if the facility used to sort the waste has the capacity to separate out key materials. This is common where non recyclable waste is used as a fuel in energy production. The reason you're still asked to separate recycling from waste is that it is proven to be the most effective way to ensure the right composition of materials are put out for collection. Mixed together, it's easy for people to put in a bit of food waste, garden waste, liquids or other incorrect items. It doesn't take much of this to render both the recycling and the waste useless.

Cool - thanks for sharing as it isn't a split loader so had wondered why is it still going into different binsOr, if food and garden waste are being collected separately, rubbish and recycling can be collected mixed together if the facility used to sort the waste has the capacity to separate out key materials.
