I have been given a new chromebook as a Christmas present to take over my ageing laptop which has a broken hinge. Outlook is not compatible with chrome so need to download a 3rd party app - any suggestions?

I tried SirMail but it had so may adverts it was unusable so uninstalled it.

Do you need an app, or would the web version be suitable?

I didn't explain properly

Hotmail is my main email and is used for all my communications (for the last 30 years and all my contacts use it), so I still need access.

There are a number of apps that will manage Outlook so looking for recommendations which are not advert top heavy. SirMail put adverts in EVERY time I entered a new page/mail etc. very annoying.

You can use K-9 mail with Hotmail - you need to use IMAP (in fact ensure you use IMAP - this keeps all mail on the server).

You can use the built-in Gmail app. Just connect to Hotmail using IMAP as explained above. In fact, that goes for just about any mail app, but Gmail is probably the easiest as it’s already there.

But the web Outlook works just fine on Chromebook, no idea why you’d think it wouldn’t? In fact, you can ‘install’ it as a progressive web app so for all intents and purposes it acts like a proper app.

As above, install the Outlook PWA.

Best advice you'll get if new to a Chromebook is stop looking for Android apps to install. (Which is what I suspect you were trying to do).
Use web apps, or preferably progressive web apps.

Once it's installed right-click the icon for Outlook and select Open in New Window.
This makes the transition to Chrome OS easier for the majority of people coming from other operating systems, as it feels like using individual application windows which they've become accustomed to on other machines.
