had a bit of a thing for these for a while.

This one looks a little flash but ace at the same time.

Had one a few years ago, bought as an ex-demonstrator. Absolutely brilliant bike to ride, so much fun and quick in any gear. Bad points were the small fuel tank (barely got over 100 miles), really slow to fill the tank and bad surging on a light throttle although mine was an early one, think it might be fixed on the later ones. No reliability issues at all.

100miles is fine….

How well do they handle in the real world? I like curve balls, also the engine looks a peach on paper… have they made any changes over the years?

It’d be an r -carbon I’d go for, ideally black ohlins.

Prices are all over the place though, so that’s hard to work out also

My local dealer has a low mileage FTR Carbon in at the minute that I’m slowly trying to persuade Mrs Safari in to getting to replace her Tuono.

I had a canny poke around it last time I was in there and they are proper nice looking things.

To me they look great, and sound even better - especially with an aftermarket system. I demo'd one at Midwest Moto a couple of months back. I didn't gel with it but there are many caveats to that:

- Haven't rode a whole lot of motorbikes
- I'm used to fast-steering bikes
- Rode it for less than an hour
- Was a bit worried by the disclaimer I'd signed making me liable for repairs - obvious but gave me heebie-jeebies

The FTR is a deeply cool bike but for me, too much of a cruiser: the steering felt quite slow and vague, and the riding position felt really alien. I couldn't relax enough to get in the flow with it, but like I say I've only ridden a few bikes, all Japanese sportsbikes or light-to-midweight nakeds.

Good bits - excellent brakes, the torque, the looks, the noise - oh the noise biglaugh

Edit to add - Midwest were offering the Carbon at about 3 or 4 grand off list price at the time

I like the look of them, although IMO the round dash suits them better but that means it's the low spec model with the non-adjustable suspension

However, I test rode one and I was very disappointed, having read all the reviews, hearing about the torque and how it was a hooligan bike to ride and it just wasn't, compared to my 990 SM

it'd be a top spec one i'd go for. Also having had a few 990 ktm's, the engine in the indian is stronger everywhere and does more everywhere.(from when I rode a boggo FT model a few years ago).

Fit and finish seemed to match the very best around, is it still the same? any long term issues with the engine?

I have the 22 model year S, so not the round dash and no Ohlins. It’s my favourite bike to ride ( have MT09 at the moment as well but had others). Really brings a smile to my face every time I use it.

It is rather quirky though, lots of engine vibration, lots of heat off the engine when stationary at lights or whatever, fuel tank is about the size of a coffee mug, no QS as std on mine but is a £400 retrofit. Despite all this I really really like it. Not the highest revving engine but good torque from low revs and lovely sound. It’s apparently easy to have the baffles out but I’ve not done it, it has a nice low rumble and I don’t need it any louder and like it as it is.

On the non round dash when the fuel gets low the fuel warning light comes on and replaces the gauge, meaning you can’t see how much you have left.

I’ve only ever seen two others out and about. I frequently get asked what is that?

Writing this has made me want to take it out but …

One of the very, very few bikes I'd buy for looks without much caring how it rode.

I’ve fancied one of those since they came it , more so once they changed the wheels , what has put me off is the “need” to get them tuned and the issues with the batteries which fail regularly and the clocks delaminating ( replacements apparently are £1500) i do still like them though .

Others suggested I must have rode a duff one - it was so bad I asked if it had been restricted at the time

A quick google shows the dyno of them are very similar so I guess it depends on gearing - my 990 has dropped a tooth and has an akra etc which might explain it

It seems they've changed the dash on the new ones which is good news as the square ones looked terrible on a retro bike and I believe they leaked too

Yeah, from Dyno results they’re about 30bhp up at 8000rpm, or 33 odd percent!

I do prefer the round dash. I wouldn’t risk paying £15k for one, so I might have to wait and get one when you can get them for £12k or less

They are about that price now .they seem to lose quite a bit of value .ftr has been dropped from range from next year.

Got to be one of the best looking bikes out there. My local dealer had this RSD one in stock.

The first 2 hits from google don't look like that

If you put a 990 on those Dyno’s with those correction figures, you’ll see about 80ish bhp at 8000rpm.
