The current manhole cover is in a bad state and the mortar around it is crumbling so I started to take it apart and clean the area in preparation for the new one being delivered Friday.

In the process of cleaning a chuck from the inside fell off, I think it's just cement but not sure but want to repair it whilst I've got some time to do so. There is a spot on the other side which is also slightly damaged looks like the roots of a rose bush is starting to break through, luckily the bush is dead so will repair both sides whilst I can.

It’s called benching, the best mix is what’s called granolithic mortar, as the name suggests it uses ground up granite so makes for a very hard wearing mortar. It’s usually referred to as ‘grano dust’, not sure if the sheds will stock it, more of a builders merchant thing. If you can get some, 5-6 grano, 1 cement, 1 soft building sand, the latter not essential: if you can’t get any, 4 grit sand 1 cement, a splash of SBR in either mix won’t hurt. Rather than try to patch the pieces that have fallen off, try to redo the whole lot, if the patched sections come adrift they may wash down the sewer causing a blockage, also make sure it slopes into the centre to stop any rats setting up camp on a flat shelf.

Ah I was hoping it was something I could get ready mixed as it is a very small patch.

The benching (the slope?) is actually in very good condition so that is all fine it is just the vertical part which makes the drain.

I lifted it before and it does look like the patch is above the water level so I can get away with not having something fast setting but ideally doing it properly would be ideal
