Hi Porsche people

I’ve been thinking about getting a 991.1 GT3 as a daily driver. Would love to hear your thoughts.
Does anyone on here have any experience on doing this?
Was wondering about the ride, noise on motorways, thoughts on mileage affecting values and… any should I be concerned on engine issues?

Thanks all

Engine issues on the 991.1 GT3 are all over the internet. There are 5 series of engines, E0/E1/F/G0/G6. As to general usage I will leave that to other PHrs who have owned one.

Depends what you are coming from.

Comfortable car generally (I have done 12 hrs straight before).

But I only drive in Europe, I expect the UK roads are not good enough to daily.

Cup 2 tyres, probably not the best choice.

Mileage will affect value.

You will need axel lift.

Having done over 120 k Miles in 64RS , GT3 and GT3rs , I always daily my cars as cannot be bothered to drive a comfy saloon car , life is simply too short . The modern cars are more than comfortable and the new generation Cup2's are fine for year round use in the UK . Did a long trip yesterday , bit wet but fun as always . The 64 I definitely needed to be younger LOL .

Look up Chris Harris Collecting Cars video on dailying his GT3 Touring.

I found it quite inspiring, particularly how he'd managed to grind off all the aero from the underside biggrin

If you're worried about noise, mileage and value before even buying one I wouldn't bother. These cars are for driving and enjoying, with thoughts about how lucky you are to be thrashing around in a GT3.

Do you think it's worth adding extra underbody protection to the GT3 cars if used year round?

Possibly for the salt times of the year , although I get underside cleaned every few weeks . GT3RS easiest to daily as higher at rear due to bigger wheels and with lift no issue on any bumps . 64 RS , mine was lowered further, did ground out a bit , also 64 had no stereo etc

GT3RS easiest to daily
That's the kind of cripplingly expensive advice I really need to hear, thanks.

edit: oh, the 992 vanilla GT3 also has 21s on the rear, right?

A dealers just advertised a 991.1 gt3rs with 9 months porsche warranty on AT for £125k.

Not sure what your budget is but it’s been a while since I’ve seen one that price at retail.

No lift on that one, but this one looks like it has both lift and folding buckets.

Is it therefore possible that a 991 GT3RS is more practical than a 992 GT3 Touring (with fixed buckets)? Apart from the wing, I guess.

The 992 is the most comfortable and a easy daily, anyone who says a 992 gt3 is hardcore needs to go and drive proper hardcore machines, unless they are coming from a roller/bentley etc, great cars on the road.

Ran a 991.1 GT3 from new in late 2014 kept it a couple of years replacing it with a new 981 GT4 and new 981 Spyder then new 991.2 GT3 CS manual and new 991.2 Carrera T manual.

My May 991.1 GT3 had the later engine luckily fitted on the production line as opposed to OPC engine swap and then delivered October 2014.

Perfectly usable as a daily unlike the 997 GT3 not overloud even on motorways and very compliant ride quality. Some don't like the 'bag of spanners' transmission clatter on idle some cars have excessive driveline shunt too.

Lift (£2.5k option new) is essential as a daily and those cars without are worth less and tough sellers too.

Later G series engine essential many cars have had 2 3 or 4 engines due to failures. As 15 year warranty from Porsche approaches expiry date there is some question as to the future value of these cars..food for thought.
Cup tyres crap sub 7 degrees and don't like standing water so winter use on these is challenging lol.

Ceramic braked cars now worth only marginally more than steels mainly due to the huge cost of maintenance....CS cars worth between 5 and 7 percent more than comforts.

Carrara white was the launch colour and most popular new (both my 991.1 and 991.2 were white) although white
is far less popular now v say Agate Sapphire GTSilver or
even black.

The gen 2 was a far better package overall and not just because of the way superior engine with far less power and torque drop off than the gen 1 approaching the red line and consequently carries a big price ££ premium for this newer gen...and this is fully justified.

Gen 1 GT3 nevertheless a great package at the money but mindful of the risks ( legit Porsche warranty is essential) many prefer the much newer 718 GT4 at similar money as a better alternative which in the real world is as rapid and as entertaining.

Herewith colour preferences on the 991.2 GT3 in the North American markets:

And the accessory choices:

Hopefully this will be broadly in-line with the cars you are looking at in terms of UK ...

For me at the prices and use case, I'd be looking at a GT4. I loved mine a lot, but I sold it to Simon at Cameron Sports Cars a couple of months ago to buy a 991.2 gt3. I wouldn't risk the .1 myself with the engine problems, a 718 GT4 is the better buy.

Not sure if Simon still has my old gt4 actually, it had a lovely comfort spec and had done 18k miles.

There’s a 991.1 GT3 at RPM Tecnik that’s caught my attention.
Liking the fact it has the RPM rear seat conversion, which would be good for my family needs.
Looks like a really cheap GT3 “Touring” in my eyes.
Shame on me, I hadn’t quite grasped how serious the original engine issues are, which is why 991.1 GT3s seem quite reasonable compared to other generations I guess?
Food for thought indeed.

You can easily daily a 991 GT3, particularly on Pilot Sport tyres and if you choose comfort seats.

I’d advise against it - for me it would be a car with buckets and Cup 2 tyres, and a cheap alternative for daily use!
