Day to day advice needed
Discussion
Birthday coming up, (flippin 70 ffs!)
My wife wants to buy me a nice watch which is great. I’m not an old fart, very active. I walk, easy mountain bike, play in 2 table tennis leagues and squeeze as many track days in as I can.
Don’t want poncy, don’t need name brands and certainly don’t want a huge dialled monstrosity.
Looking for an easy to read and illuminate for night would be good . Don’t want complicated features, nuclear power, JK has one
etc. Quite like a rugged, (not necessarily military) utilitarian look.
Open to the knowledgeable on here for their suggestions. Price, let’s keep it to a sensible £300 please.
Thanks in advance…

Question: when a size is specified, 36,38,40mm etc. is that the overall dims of the case or the face/glass size.
Generally its the diameter/width of the case (not including the crown).Another vote for a Citizen eco-drive in whichever style you prefer, the promaster tough suggested above is a good shout but there are many other options too. Have a look at the 'garrison' model (look up model number BM8560) which is similar style but normally a bit cheaper, and titanium case so its very light weight.
Eco-drive is Citizen's term for solar powered (but not just sunlight, they charge from artificial light indoors too). Accurate, reliable and never have to wind it or charge a battery, I'm a fan and have 3 of them now.
If you want something with a push-button light up at night (rather than glowing lume which most analogs have) then have a look at Timex.
You can also spend a good few hours scrolling through this thread to see what inspires you... https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

If you don't actively want a higher end watch, frankly a Timex Expedition Scout with the Indiglo illumination will do everything you're asking for very well indeed, and it has the look of MacGyver's Camper should that appeal at all.
I definitely feel some kind of field watch is appropriate.
You could have a look at Nite watches, they use Tritium for the illumination, which is less common and fun, one of the reasons I got myself one.

This is reduced to just under £300, Certina quartz chronometer

They make great watches. Switch the bracelet for a rubber strap from someone like Barton for a cracking do it all. 40mm, 100m water resistance, sapphire crystal and a very good quartz movement. Lume is fine on these, not quite up to Seiko.

Great replies guys. It looks like I’m looking for a, “field watch “. Apparently.
I have spent a while going through the, “under £200” thread, such choice! It makes the whole thing even more difficult.
I will press on. It’s strange to me. Seeing what good looking watches at a fair price Timex do. In my younger days these were definitely seen as the bottom end of the market and as a young man, wouldn’t be seen dead with one!

I got this for my nephews birthday and really liked it.

Or if you are active how about a hybrid smart watch

I have worn my Withings steel HR sport everyday for years now.

Saw this the other day, a lot of watch for not a lot of money.

This actually looks awesome. Does it have screw down crown?
Certainly does!Aim is to keep the collection to only having 1 of each style of watch... This is a totally different style to my Ranger right? They're not both just field / explorer watches right?
